Baseball season is here, big weekend ahead
SPORTS REPORT
BY CHRIS SHERMAN SA Sports Writer

It's time to put up the basketballs (well at least after the next two weekends) and dust off the old cleats and gloves. High school baseball is officially here and this weekend area teams will showcase what they have in two big tournaments.

If you aren't able to make the trip to Troy to watch our basketball teams take part in the regional tournament , then you might consider attending the Tombigbee Classic or the Clarke Prep Tournament. Both are loaded with great teams as well as some of the most promising prospects the state has to offer.

The Tombigbee Classic kicks off Saturday morning at 11 a.m in Leroy with LHS (2-0) facing off with 5A Demopolis. The Bears swept Demopolis Monday night in the season's opening game. Jackson (1-1) and Demopolis start at 1:30, followed by the Aggies and the Bears at 4 in what should be a great game between two very talented teams that should be championship contenders in their respective divisions.

Other teams participating are Citronelle, Excel, Washington County, Sweet Water, Clarke County and Millry.

Games will start in Jackson Tuesday, Feb. 26, with Clarke County and Demopolis meeting up at 4. Millry and Jackson will face-off in the nightcap, scheduled for 6:30.

Also on Tuesday over in Leroy, Excel and Washington County play at 4 followed by Sweet Water and Leroy at 6:30.

The games will rotated between Jackson High School and Leroy High School and last until Saturday, March 1.

The Clarke Prep Tournament is Thursday, Feb. 21-23 and will be baseball and softball.

Jackson Academy's baseball team opens up Thursday against Patrician at 6:00 p.m. The Lady Eagles face Tuscaloosa Academy Thursday at 4:30.

For baseball and softball fans out there, myself included, this is the perfect weekend to enjoy baseball at its best no matter which tournament you choose to watch.

With all the turmoil surrounding baseball and steroids at the Major League level it is good to know there is still good wholesome baseball being played out there.

This weekend will feature what is great about the game that used to be the most loved sport in America.

So, break out your lawn chairs, load up the family and come get a glimpse of the best baseball in the state this weekend. You will not be disapointed and very well may be watching several future state champions in the process.
