Leroy got the 2008 season off to a roaring start Monday in Demopolis with a doubleheader sweep of 5A Demopolis. Last year's 2A state champs won the opener 10-7 and took the nightcap 16-4.

Brandon Jones (1-0) got the win in game one with four strong innings, giving up only two runs on five hits with three strikeouts. Leading a balanced attack at the plate for the Bears were Phillip Ervin, going 3-4, including a RBI double. Stephen Scoggins and Jones each went 2-3 with two runs scored and Grant Brown had a double and a RBI.

Leroy plated the first run of the season in the first inning when Scoggins scored from third on a throwing error. The Bears added three more runs in the third on five consecutive hits and scored four runs on five hits in the fifth inning.

With the score 8-2, Joel Weaver came on to relieve Jones on the mound. Weaver had a shaky fifth, giving up four runs on three hits and three walks, but worked a perfect sixth inning. Clint Moseley came on to close the game and struck out the side on 10 pitches.

Game two was never close as the Bears pounded out 17 hits and Brown worked four strong innings on the mound. Brown (1-0) gave up four runs on six hits and had seven strikeouts.

Leading the Bears at the plate was Scoggins who went 3-3 with five RBIs and two two-run doubles. Moseley was 3-4 with four RBIs and Brown went 3-4 with a two-run double. Jones and Chris Weaver each added two hits and a RBI; Will Blount had a two-run double and Jonathan Woodyard had a double.

Jarrett Davis closed the game on the mound and struck out the side in between three walks.

The Tombigbee Tournament gets under way Saturday, Feb. 23, in Leroy.
