Nancy Jackson Hazwood
Lois Dearmon

Lois Dearmon, a native and resident of Millry, died Feb. 12, 2008 at Wayne General Hospital in Waynesboro, Miss. at the age of 81. She was a member of Sand Ridge Church of God in Millry.

Her survivors include her husband, Eckie Dearmon of Millry; a daughter, Viola Faye Morris of Millry; and two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Feb. 14 at Sand Ridge Church of God with interment in the church cemetery. Arrangements were directed by Lathan Funeral Home of Chatom.

Curtis Rayford Miller

Curtis Rayford Miller, 72, died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008 at his Salitpa residence. One of 11 children, he was the son of Robert and Vermelle Thomas Miller. Miller graduated from Citronelle High School in 1956 and moved to Jackson that same year working for Autry Greers and Sons as a meat merchandiser. A former member of Stave Creek Baptist Church in Jackson, he had served as a Sunday School teacher, deacon, on the building committee for the new church and at one time as youth pastor. After moving to Salitpa, he became a member of the River Hill Baptist Church serving as a deacon. He was a member of the Alabama National Guard, a charter member of the Citronelle National Guard, chaplain for the Salitpa Fire Department and worked as one of Salitpa's poll workers.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Camilla Miller of Salitpa; two daughters, Charlotte Faye (Michael) Shoultz of Grand Bay and Charlene Kaye (David) Rikard of Leroy; four grandchildren, Curtis Michael Shoultz, Mary Margaret Shoultz, Thomas Ray Gibson and Stephen Windle Gibson; four stepgrandchildren, Harley Rikard, Kelly Rikard, Jeremy Rikard and Vanessa Rikard; one step-great-grandson, Peyton; two sisters, Bernice McAdory and Mildred Hennis; and four brothers, Robert Miller, Bobby Miller, Terry "Blue" Miller and Brown Miller.

Funeral services were Feb. 16 at the River Hill Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Wilton Bennett. Speakers included the Revs. Al Dykeman, Scott Myers and Tommy York, Dr. Paul Petcher and his nephew Greg Miller. Interment followed in the church cemetery under the direction of Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson.

Pallbearers were Joey Bozeman, Donny McAdory, Tim Miller, Mark Miller, Ben Etheredge, Matt Miller, Jeff Etheredge, Ricky Summers, Junior Hennis and Chuck Miller.

Jimmy Bruce Savage

Jimmy Bruce Savage, a native of Allen and resident of Chatom, died at the age of 67 at the Washington County Infirmary, Feb. 18, 2008. He was a member of the Hobson Assembly of God Church and was retired as a sergeant from the Alabama National Guard after 32 years of service. He was also a retiree of Kimberly Clark paper mill.

Survivors include his wife, Voncille Savage of Chatom; a daughter, Lynn (Don) Welborn of Chatom; two brothers, Ray Savage of Wagarville and Andy (Gayle) Savage of Tibbie; a sister, Shirley (Glenn) Lawson of Saraland; and one grandchild, Braxton Welborn of Chatom.

Funeral services were Feb. 20 at the Hobson Assembly of God Church with the Revs. Steve Foster and Jimmy Butts officiating. Interment was in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery in Bigbee directed by Lathan Funeral Home of Chatom.

Active pallbearers were Jeff Lawson, Thomas Savage, Ricky Savage, Travis Abate, Jody Hayes and Brent Hutto.

Minnie Lou Scruggs

Minnie Lou Scruggs, 81, died Feb. 17, 2008 at her residence in Leroy. She was a native of Millry. A homemaker, she attended Pine Grove United Methodist Church in Leroy.

She is survived by her husband, William Steve Scruggs Jr. of Leroy; son, Tim (Diane) Holston of Jackson; brother, Brandon Carpenter of York; sister, Edna Earl Holston of Foley; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Feb. 19 in the chapel of Lathan Funeral Home in Jackson. Interment was in the Millry Methodist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Jason Holston, Joey Holston, Billy Sellers, Ray Davis and Donnie Carpenter. Honorary pallbearers included Jim Bailey, David Ikner, Buster Carpenter and Lonnie Loper.

Brenda Louise Starks

Brenda Louise Starks, a native of Brownwood, Texas and resident of Coffeeville died at the age of 59 in an area medical facility Feb. 15, 2008. She was a homemaker and a member of New Faith Baptist Church of Coffeeville.

She is survived by her husband, Eddie B. Starks of West Bend; a son, Brian Eddie (Angie) Starks of West Bend; one daughter, Carol S. (Larry) Cox of West Bend; brother, Larry Zangas of Flomaton; sister, Kathy Adams of Atmore; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services were Feb. 17 at the West Bend Baptist Church with the Revs. Wilton Bennett and Warren Huggins officiating. Interment was in the West Bend Cemetery under the direction of Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson.

Pallbearers were Brian James, Jason James, Javie Allen, Jason Allen, Jamey Dunagan and Stacey Dunagan.

Honorary pallbearers included Vic Dungan, Donnie Dungan, David Marcet and Joe James.

Claude Aaron Tarver

Claude Aaron Tarver, a longtime resident of McIntosh, died Feb. 18, 2008 in Baton Rouge, La., at the age of 83. He worked as a superintendent at Olin Chemical, was a WWII veteran having served in the U.S. Army and an active member of the McIntosh United Methodist Church. He wife, Doris Jewel and sister, Mae Stanton, preceded him in death.

He is survived by two sons, Andrew (Cathy) Tarver of Baton Rouge, La. and Joseph Tarver of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.; daughter, Sandra (Richard) Sacco of Albany, Ga.; two sisters, Anna Evans of Fairford and Carolyn Moore of Saraland; and five grandchildren, Emily Sacco (Sewell) Avant of Atlanta, Carrie Sacco of Fayetteville, N.C., Ashley Tarver (Nathan) Donald and Stephanie Tarver, both of Baton Rouge, and Aaron Tarver of Ponte Vedra Beach.

Funeral services were Feb. 20 at the McIntosh United Methodist Church with interment in the church cemetery. Arrangements were directed by Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shriners Children's Hospital.

Nancy Jackson Hazwood

Nancy Roper Jackson "Nannie" Hazwood, 86, a native and resident of Grove Hill, died Feb. 17, 2008 at her home. She retired from Grove Hill Memorial Hospital as a part of the housekeeping staff and was a member of Walnut Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Morvin.

Survivors include a son, George Marvin (Corine) Jackson of Whatley; a daughter Thelma (Rev. L.D.) Jackson of Grove Hill; three sisters, Mae (DeLeon) Burroughs of Grove Hill, Lillian Flemmings of Dixmoor, Ill. And Esther Robinson of Chicago, Ill.; two brothers, Calvin Coolidge (Mary) Roper of Cincinnati, Ohio and Dolphin (Lillie) Roper Jr. of Indianapolis, Ind.; and three grandchildren, Brittney Jackson and George Jackson, both of Whatley and Myesia Jackson of New York, N.Y.

Services will be Saturday, Feb. 23, 11 a.m. at Walnut Hill Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. David Fuller, pastor and eulogist. Viewing will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery with Andrews Funeral Home of Jackson directing.

Jacob Bettis

Jacob "Jack" Bettis, 88, of Jackson, died Feb. 14, 2008 at his daughter's home in Birmingham. He was a Boise retiree, a World War II veteran of the United States Army and a member of the St. Union Baptist Church in Jackson. His parents, Ida and Alex Bettis; one brother, Lenzy Bettis; four sisters, Christine Franklin, Ollie Mae Dawson, Rosa Ella Harris and Margaret Lyles, preceded him in death.

He is survived by two daughters, Barbara (Rev. Robert) Alexander of Birmingham and Brenda Watson of Maine; one son, Timothy Taylor of Mobile; a sister, Annie Corine Bettis of Los Angeles, Calif.; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday, Feb. 23 with viewing from 11 a.m. until the funeral hour at noon. The Rev. James M. Howard, pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow in the Cedar Fork Baptist Church Cemetery in Suggsville with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directing.

In lieu of flowers donations can be sent to the First Missionary Baptist Church of East Boyle, 1337 6th St. NW, Birmingham, AL 35215.

Paul Mitchell

Paul Mitchell of Gainestown, died Feb. 11, 2008 at the Mobile Infirmary Hospital at the age of 80. His parents, Gertrude and Jack Mitchell, daughter, Etta Rea Mitchell and son, Dewayne Mitchell, preceded him in death.

Survivors include four sons, Paul Mitchell Jr., Charlie Mitchell, Frank Mitchell and Larry Mitchell, all of Mobile; two daughters, Verdean Mitchell of Houston, Texas and Rhonda Crawford of Mobile; three sisters, Australia (Leonard) Jackson of Barlow Bend, Irene (Clausell) Stokes of Gainestown and Ruth Stephens of Mt. Vernon; and nine grandchildren.

Funeral services were Feb. 15 in the chapel of Jackson Memorial Funeral Home in Jackson with the Rev. Chester Williams officiating. Interment followed in the Good Hope A.M.E. Cemetery in Gainestown.
