As part of the lead-up to the Annual Art Auction and Dinner, the Washington County Public Library hosted a book signing for Bob Whetstone, author of "Grave Dancin" on Tuesday, Feb. 19.

Whetstone grew up in a mill town, Alexander City, Alabama, where Avondale Mills was the life's blood of the town. Avondale built the mill town homes, a swimming pool, and a school (before 1932) as they were interested in providing the children of the mill families with an education.

Whetstone's mother and her siblings worked in the Avondale Mills for 10 cents an hour. His book tells "their story," and how so much of their lives were intertwined with the fabric mills. The story is told in the language of the people of that time and place; and though it is fiction, is representative of a particular part of Alabama's culture.

The Art Auction and Dinner is Feb. 29 at the Chatom Community Center with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. for the silent auction. Tickets are $30 and available at the library.
