Letters to the Editor

Welch apologizes

Dear Editor,

During my adult years I have endured several tragedies that have afflicted my emotional life.

Perhaps the one that changed my life the most was the accident in which a 32 1/2 inch stick was thrust through my body. I pulled the stick out myself and surgeons spent nine hours repairing the damages. During the surgery and months of recovery, I was given large amounts of Demerol and morphine. I suffered tremendous psychiatric damage from the drugs so the chief surgeon sent me to a psychiatrist who prescribed a medicine to correct the impairment the drugs had caused.

For several weeks recently I did not take the medicine as prescribed. During this time I was making poor judgments and was guilty of shoplifting in the Jackson Wal-Mart.

I apologize to the people of Wal-Mart, to my family members and to the citizens of the area. I have learned a very valuable lesson. I am taking the medicine now and plan to always take it according to the psychiatrist's instructions.

Please publish this letter to remind the citizens of Grove Hill why it is necessary for me to take medicine and to tell them that I am taking the medicine and returning to my normal health. I also want citizens to know that I am committed- as I always have been- to supporting Grove Hill and its people.

Thank you, Willie Welch

Grove Hill.

Clarke County Career Day a success

Dear Editor,

Superintendent Gerald Stephens, Sharon Tiggs, the Clarke County job coach, along with the transition team, counselors and teachers of Clarke County would like to thank students, vendors and sponsors for making Career Day a success.

Asberry Daffin opened with an invocation, Mrs. Velma Rowden/Mayor Hudson did the welcome and Dr. Edwina Hart was program conductor.

The theme was "Students Striving for Excellence". Students discussed careers with different vendors and some of the students received employment. The students also expressed interest in joining the military. Several of the vendors in the surrounding area gave advice on health issues, summer employment and information on how to acquire jobs.

We would like to thank Mrs. Sheryl Horton and the chamber of commerce, all businesses and participants that contributed to this day. Special thanks to our sponsors: Alabama Power, Boise Paper Mill, Coca Cola, Merchants Bank, Record & Sound Shop, Tri Vendors and Wal-Mart.

With your help we can make Career Day in Clarke County an annual event for the students in their transitioning from school to the workforce.

We are looking forward to working with you next year.

Sharon Tiggs
