Johnson scores 42 to lead Bears to championship
By Chris Sherman SA Sports Writer

The Leroy Bears have suddenly caught fire winning three out of their last four games with the last victory earning them the 2A Area 1 tournament championship.

First round

Leroy 50, Bayside 44 Leroy finally knocked off nemisis Bayside Academy by six points Friday night in Excel. The Admirals had beaten the Bears twice this year and have been a thorn in the side of the Leroy squad.

"We finally didn't let them shoot 40 free throws," Leroy coach Brian Henry said. "We almost just didn't play defense to keep them from going to the foul line. We got in a 2-3 zone and they could't make the shots," he said.

Aaron Williams had a big night for Leroy with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Derrick Johnson had 15 points and Patrick Rivers 11 in the win.

It took some extra time but the Bears knocked off Flomaton 75-71 in overtime thanks to an amazing 42 points by the freshman Johnson.

In the last two championship games (county and area) for Leroy, Johnson has amassed 38 and 42 points including going 8- 10 from three-point range against Flomaton and scoring 23 points in the fourth quarter in the county championship.

"Derrick has been on a tear," Henry said. "We were down by 12 with 3:30 to go and he hits four straight three's to tie the dang thing up. Then he gets fouled and makes two free throws. He scored 15 straight points. We are playing our best ball and now have a chance to go to Troy with a win."

Johnson, Rivers and Williams were named to the all-tournament team.

Leroy (11-12) hosts Red Level Friday night at 7 in a state sub-regional game.
