The Jackson Aggies boys basketball team fell just short of winning the Class 4A Area 1 Tournament championship with a 69-65 loss to Thomasville Monday, March 11 in Jackson.

First Round

Jackson 73, Monroe 63

The Aggies opened up the tournament with a 10-point win over the Monroe County Tigers. BJ Brown was the leading scorer with 19 points. Corey Besteda and Gabriel Mass had 13 points each; Josh Ezell 12 and Ladarius Austin 10 to round out the top scorers for the Aggies.

Championship

Thomasville 69, Jackson 65

Despite leading for most of the first half, Jackson could not overcome the hot shooting of Darril Jackson and Tysean Thompson who had 16 points each. Jackson fell behind by 10 points with under three minutes to go in the game. Jackson cut the lead to 62- 61 before Thomasville pulled away again in the final minute. Mass had 13 points and Besteda 11 to lead the Jackson offense. Antron Hill added 11 for the Tigers.

"I was pleased with our play overall," Aggie coach Marcus Caster said. "We beat a very good Monroe team. I am not sure we didn't get content. Thomasville was hungry. They really wanted it, " he said.

B.J. Brown, Josh Ezell, Corey Besteda and Gabriel Mass were named to the all-tournament team.

Jackson (16-10) now has to travel for Friday night's subregional. The Aggies meet up with Hillcrest-Evergreen for the third time this season with the two teams splitting the previous two games.

"I am looking forward to going to Hillcrest. We beat them by 18 at home earlier this year but lost by two at their place. It will be a good matchup," Caster said.

Game time is at 7 p.m.
