Deadline for annual AARP 'Best Employers for Workers Over 50' fast approaching

The application deadline for the annual AARP "Best Employers for Workers Over 50" is fast approaching.

Employers offering workplace practices and policies friendly toward workers aged 50-plus are encouraged to apply at www.aarp.org/bestemployers before Feb. 15.

With Alabama's historically low unemployment rate, attracting and keeping older workers has become a priority for many employers. As more and more boomers approach retirement, attracting and retaining skilled workers will become increasingly critical for employers seeking to retain a competitive edge. Estimates are that by 2016, onethird (34 percent) of the total U.S workforce is expected to be age 50 or older, up from 28 percent in 2007.

In its eighth year, the AARP Best Employers program recognizes innovative organizations that offer policies and practices that appeal to workers 50+, including flexible work options, training/learning opportunities, competitive health and retirement benefits, and age-neutral performance and appraisal systems.

In 2007, Huntsville-based Intuitive Research and Technology Corporation was among the 50 employers nationwide who made the list.

Any employer with at least 50 employees and based in the United States is eligible to apply to the AARP"Best Employers for Workers Over 50" program. This includes for-profit companies, not-for-profit organizations, educational institutions and local, state and federal government bodies.

An independent research firm and a panel of judges comprised of outside experts score applicants. Final ranking is based on these scores after review by AARP. Best Employers honorees will be acknowledged at a recognition dinner, which will be followed by an international conference addressing best practices among international companies.

According to its Web site, AARP is a nonprofit, nonpartisan membership organization that helps people 50-plus have independence, choice and control in ways that are beneficial and affordable to them and society as a whole. AARP does not endorse candidates for public office or make contributions to either political campaigns or candidates. We produce AARP The Magazine, published bimonthly; AARP Bulletin, our monthly newspaper; AARP Segunda Juventud, our bimonthly magazine in Spanish and English; NRTA Live & Learn, our quarterly newsletter for 50-plus educators; and our Web site, AARP.org.
