The H.W. Pearce Memorial Park Assembly House on February 9 was the setting for the second annual dinner and auction to benefit the Regional Child Advocacy Center (CAC) and "Almost Home." The building was filled almost to capacity with those who believe in coming to the aid of neglected or abused children. The theme of the evening was "Honor thy Children."

The CAC advocates for children by educating the community on child abuse and neglect and providing prevention projects. When a court action is necessary, the CAC Victim Advocate offers the child and family emotional support and preparation for the legal process.

When it has been determined that a child is a victim of abuse or neglect, and cannot remain at home in safety, Almost Home offers a home-like environment for them. Almost Home is located in Clarke County and takes referred children from birth to 18 years. Although licensed in Clarke County, Almost Home will take referrals through any DHR in Alabama.

The silent auction began at 5:30 p.m. with 49 items including several door prizes. There were 34 items in the live auction which included such diverse items as an Alabama football signed by Nick Saban, a handmade quilt, oil paintings, jewelry and even a deer hunt at Gilmore farm. Eddie Glass served as auctioneer.

The Gilmore & Gilmore Law Firm was the corporate sponsor and 12 other area businesses and municipalities were silver ($1,000) sponsors. Additionally, many other area businesses and individuals were $250 level sponsors.

Larry Jones is chairman of the board of directors; Mary English, executive secretary; Heidi Gaillard, victim advocate and Val Pugh, foster parent.

Rousseau's catered the seafood dinner.
