New athletic facility for Jackson High approved
By Barry H. Hendrix
Education approved Feb. 7 a bid for construction of a new academic/ athletic complex at the Jackson High School campus.

The structure will house dressing rooms and offices for the football and baseball teams as well as featuring classrooms.

Hub Construction of Jackson offered a $1,175,023.00 low bid. The prices were lower than bids a year ago, said Gerald Stephens, school superintendent.

More than $1 million in bond issue money along with funding from the City of Jackson ($50,000 a year) and the county Park and Recreation Board will be utilized. "The students at JHS deserve this. It should have been constructed when the high school campus was originally built," Stephens said.

Stephens hopes to have the building finished before the 2008-2009 school year begins.

Other business

In other action from the Thursday meeting, there had been a recent month-long inspection of the 71 school buses in the county fleet. "We only had four deficiencies," Stephens said. "It wasn't anything major." An example was a bad wire harness on an older bus. All buses are cleared to run, he said. "School bus safety continues to be our top priority."

• Work continues on the new band room at Clarke County High School. "They promised us it would be ready before school is out, which will enable us to go ahead and equip the room and have it set up for next year," Stephens said.

• Family medical leave was approved for Ruby Lee Jones.
