Former Grove Hill mayor accused of shoplifting
By Evan Carden SA Editor

Former Grove Hill Mayor Willie Welch faces theft charges following his arrest at the Wal- Mart Supercenter in Jackson last week.

According to Jackson Police Officer Barry Fowler's report, the police department received a call around 10:35 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 6, from the store's management reporting an incident of shoplifting. Further investigation revealed that security personnel had observed Welch allegedly taking items from different areas throughout the store. When he went to leave, security personnel stopped and detained him.

In Welch's possession they found four drill bits, one rifle scope, one rifle sling, one XHigh scope ring, one pack of C02 cartridges and a set of scope mounts. Officer Fowler also observed several firearms, which included two rifles and a pistol inside Welch's vehicle. A convicted felon, he is forbidden to possess firearms. Welch was arrested and charged with third degree theft of property. He was released on $500 bond.

The Department of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms will conduct a follow-up investigation concerning Welch's possession of the firearms. Further charges may result.
