Letter to the Editor I would like to commend Linda Breedlove for the column that she wrote a couple of weeks ago pertaining to the problem of litter along Highway 69. It is a problem that those of us who live out this way are reminded of twice each time we come to town. Once going to town and again when we come back home. From personal experience, I can tell you that it is nearly impossible to keep ahead of the litterers. They throw it out faster than you can pick it up. As Linda mentioned, some areas are better than others, but some areas just seem to get worse by the day. Highway 69 is a certified mess, but there are many other roads in the county that are just as bad, or worse. For at least the past five years the Clarke County Citizens Against Littering has been working to address this very serious problem. We have explored various ways to attack the problem, with mixed results. At the present time, our committee is placing emphasis in two areas. First, an effort is under way to enlist as many people as we can to sign up for the Adopt-A-Mile program throughout the county. And secondly, and perhaps most importantly, we have a very active and dedicated group that is implementing various educational programs and activities at all grade levels in the schools to teach our children how to become good stewards of their environment. Again, thank you Linda for highlighting a serious problem that is in need of attention. And thank you Mr. Editor for being a member of our committee and allowing The South Alabamian to be our forum.
