Need for county animal shelter is evident
I have seen many dogs wandering beside the highways, and probably just as many whose lives have ended there. Sometimes these dogs aren't homeless strays, but have been allowed by their owners to run loose, or have escaped an enclosure. Whichever the case, the need for a shelter is something that would benefit the entire county. I have lived in other counties that have animal shelters and although not every dog that runs loose is saved, the number of dead ones on the highway seem to be less. Recently, this issue was brought to the forefront of my attention by some friends who happen to be the couple I spoke of in the story about the yellow lab on this week's front page. I met 'Yeller," which is what they nicknamed him, and he is a very gentle, friendly fellow. If someone has lost him, I know they are surely missing him. I can't imagine him being abandoned. If he were my dog, I would be looking for him constantly and using all of the resources at my disposal, such as friends who would help and running ads in the local paper, to find him. If I discovered he were shot, as has happened to Yeller, I would be really upset. For Yeller to be as friendly and well-trained as he is, tells me someone once cared a great deal for him. If there were an animal shelter in the county, perhaps Yeller could have been taken there before he ended up at my friends' home injured. I am thankful they are kind people who love animals and took the time to see that he received the medical attention he needed. I encourage all those out there who feel the way I do to stop by the Pine City Vet Clinic and make a contribution to help with his operation. I also encourage everyone in the county who loves their pets and animals in general to contact their county commissioner, Commissioner DuBose or Lee Hutto and lend their support for obtaining a countywide animal shelter. We as a community will benefit and so will the animals.
To the person who shot Yeller, I have just one thing to say and that is shame on you for shooting a dog that is not vicious nor poses any danger to anyone. There is no excuse for being cruel to animals.
