Lady Demons win area championship, 60th straight game The McIntosh Lady Demons continue to be one of the most dominating programs in state history with their 59th and 60th straight wins this past weekend to earn the Class 1A Region 1 Championship. The top ranked Demons (26- 0) are two wins away from second place all time in consecutive wins behind the 62 won by T. R. Miller from 1994-96 and 62 by Hartselle from 1984-86 according to the Alabama High School Athletic Associations state record books despite another report that said the Demons were two wins away from breaking the state record. Athens holds that honor with 69 consecutive victories from 2001-2003. But at any rate, it has been an amazing run for the Lady Demons. In the first game of the tournament, McIntosh throttled Coffeeville 87-28 after jumping out to a 19-0 lead in the first quarter. McIntosh led 33-4 at the half. Brittany Simmons had 20 points and 12 assists to lead the Demons. Xavier Barnes added 15, Jakia Reed 12 and Velencia Reed 10 for McIntosh. In the championship game, the Demons again were not tested as they breezed to a 81-30 victory behind Simmons' quadruple-double. The talented junior had 17 points, 10 rebounds, 12 assists and 11 steals. Velencia Reed led the Lady Demons in scoring with 24 points while Barnes had 15 and Jakia Reed chipped in with 14.
McIntosh hosts Marengo Thursday at 6 p.m. with the winner advancing to the Region Tournament in Troy.
