Take refuge in the Lord; let Him be your 'Rock'
The first part of II Samuel describes David's deliverance from danger at the hands of his enemies. The use of the words "rock" and "fortress" in chapter 22 and verse 2 describes David's feelings well because he often found refuge among the desert rocks and "fortress" refers to other places where David sought refuge. But David realized that true security is found only in the Lord. He knew that the Lord was his Deliverer. We may not find ourselves being chased or pursued by armies through a wilderness or desert but we all have trials. And we, like David, each need a place of refuge and deliverance from our troubles. The question we need to ask ourselves is this, "Where do we turn for comfort during these times?" Do we turn to entertainment, work, exercise or food? These things may temporarily help you forget your problems, but they will not take them away or solve them. In fact, too much involvement in these temporal things will only make matters worse. God has eternity in mind, not our present comfort. We can trust in Him in bad times as well as good.
God wants to help you. He wants to protect and deliver you as He did David, but He can only do so when you turn to Him. When you start to worry over your problems, when you start to feel trapped like David, remember to take refuge in the Lord. Let Him be your "Rock", your "Fortress" and your "Deliverer!"
