WCHS tops Leroy in county championship
First Round WCHS 69, Millry 48 The Bulldogs opened up the tournament with a 21-point blowout over the Millry Wildcats Friday night. Brent Holcombe had a game-high 26 points and Dontae Turner added nine for the Bulldogs. Kendrick Gray led the Wildcats with 12 points. Semi Finals Leroy erupted for 99 points in a 99-93 double overtime win against McIntosh to advance to the championship game against Washington County. Patrick Rivers led Leroy with 29 points while freshman Derrick Johnson chipped in with 25. Lawrence Powell added 19 for the Bears, who played the game without head coach Brian Henry who was ejected early in the contest. Championship Leroy fell behind by 25 points with five minutes to go in the game before the Bears started draining threes but it wasn't enough as the Bulldogs held on for a 90-81 victory. Johnson scored 23 points in the fourth quarter and 38 for the game to help the Bears' attempt at a comeback. Rivers added 16 for Leroy. The Bulldogs were led by Holcombes' 26 points. Simeon Williamson had 22 and Davin Green 16 for WCHS. "We played well," WCHS coach Terry Sheffield said. "Leroy can shoot in their gym. We were up 20 in the fourth and they just kept hitting threes." Leroy coach Brian Henry also had praise for his team. "We played the way we have all year. Chatom was up by 25 but we didn't quit. Then we won a double overtime game against McIntosh where we scored 99 points with me not out there. If you would have told me we would score 99 and 85 points in the tourney, I would have said we won the championship," Henry said. Leroy travels to Excel this weekend for the area tournament. The Bears face- off with Bayside Academy Friday, Feb. 8 at 5:30.
WCHS heads up to Grove Hill for their area tournament this weekend. The Bulldogs open up with Mobile Christian.
