Area Obituaries Kathleen Bumpers Deas Kathleen Bumpers Deas of Jackson, died Jan. 30, 2008 at the Jackson Health Care Facility at the age of 82. A lifelong resident of Clarke County, she was employed with Vanity Fair Mills in Jackson and owned and operated Ray and Tom's Restaurant in Jackson for 17 years. Mrs. Deas was a member of the First Baptist Church in Jackson. She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Thomas "Tom" Deas Sr., her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gus Bumpers and brothers, Ceathil and Leon Bumpers. Survivors include a son, Tommy Deas of Jackson; one daughter, Bebe Garrett of Jackson; five sisters, Lyndal Scruggs and Doris Buendicho, both of Coffeeville, June Roseberry, Jackie Cox and Patricia Meyer, all of Mobile; one brother, Rocky Bumpers of Butler; three grandchildren, T.J. Marshall, Rachael McDaniel and Jolie Carr; two great-grandchildren, Nathan and Leah Ott; three great-step-grandchildren, Morgan McDaniel, Sydney Carr and Caroline Carr; and one special nephew, Lefty Anderson of Mobile. Funeral services were Feb. 1 in the chapel of Lathan Funeral Home in Jackson with the Rev. Brian Jemison officiating. Interment was in the New Prospect Cemetery in Coffeeville with Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson and Bumpers Funeral Home of Butler directing. Pallbearers were Trey Deas, Thomas Ott, Hank Ott, Chuck Anderson, Alton Deas and Craig Scruggs. Honorary pallbearers included Troy Jones, Charles Montgomery, Henry Ott, Ricky Dunagan, Tiffany Alford, T.J. Marshall, Jimmy Deas, Spence Walker, Davis Deas, Alvin Montgomery, Sam Anderson, Doug Walker, Champ Bowling, Mike Garrett, James Long, Willie Pear Williams, Trey Wilson, Johnnie Mae Daffin and the staff of Jackson Health Care Facility and Southern Care Hospice. Grady Earl Sheffield Grady Earl Sheffield, a machinist for Vanity Fair Intimates in Jackson prior to becoming disabled, died Feb. 3, 2008 in a local hospital at the age of 60. He was a resident of Chatom and a member of the New Life Fellowship Church in Chatom. Survivors include his wife, Sharron M. Sheffield of Chatom; a son, Joshua (Marsha) Sheffield of Mobile; two daughters, Amzie (Jon) Gunter of Chatom and Rada Sheffield of Mobile; two brothers, Cecil Sheffield of Bigbee and James Sheffield of St. Stephens; a sister, Janice Goldman of St. Stephens; and four grandchildren, Addelyn Foster and Zander Sheffield, both of Mobile and Gretchen Gunter and Raina Gunter, both of Chatom. Funeral services were Feb. 4 in the chapel of Lathan Funeral Home in Jackson with the Rev. Danny Wilson, Naomi Black and the Rev. Bob Young officiating. Interment was in the Chatom Church of God Cemetery. Pallbearers were Fred Mazingo, Keith Baker, David Carpenter, Ben Atchison, James Singleton and Mike Goldman. Honorary pallbearers included the men of New Life Fellowship Church. Taurus Jamaal Adams Taurus Jamaal "TJ" Adams, 30, a native of Fort Polk, La. and a resident of Columbus, Ga., died Jan. 30, 2008 in McIntosh. He graduated from Hardaway High School in Columbus, attended Columbus Technical College and was a member of the Perfect Praise Outreach Ministry Church of God in Christ in Columbus. Leo Adams Sr. and Lorene Adams, his paternal grandfather and maternal grandmother respectively, preceded him in death. He is survived by his mother and father, Gracie Pear and Clifford Bernard Adams Sr. of Columbus, Ga.; three sisters, Donethia Faye (Mark Edward) Nowlin of Fort Polk, Della Reneé (Joseph) Lewis and Valerie Lee (Jimmie) Neal, both of Columbus; two brothers, Clifford Bernard (Evrin) Adams Jr. and Demetrius Lavon Adams, both of Columbus; paternal grandmother, Adell Adams of McIntosh; and maternal grandfather, J.C. Adams of McIntosh. Services were Feb. 5 at Lang's Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in McIntosh with the Rev. Alvin Hamilton, pastor, officiating. Interment was in the Vaughn Cemetery in McIntosh, directed by Andrews Funeral Home of Jackson. Active pallbearers and flower bearers were his family and friends. Honorary pallbearers were Anthony Adams, Damien Adams, Deniz Adams, Mark Nowlin Jr. and Quentin Neal. Earnest Gray Earnest Gray, 59, of Jackson, died Feb. 1, 2008 at Mobile Infirmary Hospital in Mobile. He was a member St. James A.M.E. Church of Choctaw Bluff, a former member of the original Golden Tones and current member of the Purified Anointed Gospel Singers. He is survived by his wife, Minnie Mitchell Gray of Jackson; four daughters, Eola (Nathan) Smith and Pamela Cook, both of Cincinnati, Ohio, Sonja Baker of Prichard and Minister Mary Knight of Mobile; three sons, Adrain (MarQuilla) Cook and Robert (Marreen) Cook, both of Cincinnati and Delaney (Brenda) Mitchell of Mobile; mother and father, Annie and Earnest Gray Sr. of Birmingham; eight sisters, Veronica (Gilbert) Hinton, Helen Toddle, Valeria (Lorenze) Jackson, Regenia Dance, Carlis Hall and Wanda Phillips, all of Birmingham, Charlotte (Thomas) Moody of Detroit, Mich. and JoAn Richardson of Cleveland, Ohio; four brothers, James (Catherine) Gray and Donald Dance, both of Birmingham, Julius Gray of Mobile and Ronnie Dance of Ohio; 20 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be Friday, Feb. 8, 6 p.m. at the New Rejoicing Full Gospel Church, 2467 Victor Ave., Mobile. Viewing will be Saturday, Feb. 9, 10 a.m. until the funeral hour at noon at St. James A.M.E. Church with the Rev. Clausell Boykin, pastor and officiating minister. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directing.
