Clarke Grand Jury returns 249 indictments

The Clarke County Grand Jury returned 249 criminal indictments or "true bills" last week.

The 249 included 188 felony charges and 61 misdemeanors. Several cases were continued for the term, either for more investigation or because one or more witnesses did not appear.

Grand jurors toured the courthouse and other county properties and made several recommendations.

The Board of Registrars' office in the courthouse basement has been damaged by water leaks and needs repairs and a new air conditioning unit for the office.

The district attorney's complex has several offices that need repainting and the stair rail needs tightening.

More storage space is needed for the Emergency Management Agency office in the basement. Also, exposed wires need to be concealed and there is a slow leak through ceiling tiles that is causing mold to form.

The revenue commissioner's office needs repairs to the bathroom, exposed wiring and the filing room ceiling. This office needs a new air conditioning unit and a new door.

Ceiling tiles in the law library on the second floor should be replaced.

At the county jail, protective glass should be installed in the front office and broken windows in the exercise yard should be repaired. Videos in the control room should be recorded and cataloged.

They apparently were mistaken about inmate food costs as provided by the state. They suggested that meal costs be increased to $1.75 per inmate but Sheriff Bobby Moore said that is what it is now and has been for years. That $1.75 is for three meals a day.

Grand jurors reviewed the books and audits of various departments and said they appeared to be in order.
