Lady Eagles hot as area tournament begins
JA (9-8) fell by one point to Wilcox and knocked off Marengo and Clarke Prep this past week. In the first game of the week, JA lost a game it probably should have won 36-35 to Wilcox. After a sluggish start allowed the Wildcats to pull ahead 12-3 after one quarter, the Eagles tied the game up 26-26 heading into the final stanza. That was as close as they could get as Wilcox was able to hang on down the stretch to pick up the victory. Evin Bowling had 15 points, Maggie Bowling nine and Amy Thomas added six for the Lady Eagles. The Eagles bounced back with a 52-46 win over Marengo, Friday, Jan. 25. Evin Bowling had 21 points to lead the Eagles, while Maggie Bowling added 16 and Kayla Lowery had 16. Clarke Prep visited JA Monday, Jan. 28 and limped back to Grove Hill with a 56- 31 loss to the Eagles. Maggie Bowling erupted for 18 points while Kayla Lowery and Evin Bowling each added 16 points in the lopsided win. "We did about what I expected us to do this year," Lady Eagle coach Mike Garrett said. "We finished one game over .500. We have done a lot better since Christmas and we are actually playing at a pretty high level right now. We have got to keep working hard and cut down on the mistakes. If we do that we have a chance to win some more games. We have improved as a team, we just need to take care of the ball," Garrett said. JA Varsity Boys The Jackson Academy boys varsity team fell to 1-16 with losses to Wilcox, Marengo and Clarke Prep this week in round ball action. Wilcox handed the Eagles their first loss of the week with a 54-29 victory. Dent Beard and Trent Slayton were the leading scorers for JA with 14 points each. Wesley Harris added 10. Marengo cruised to a 60-36 win over JA on Friday. Harris led the Eagles with eight points. Josh Williams and Sawyer Donald both had six, David Hughston five and Jeremy McVay two for Jackson. Things didn't get any better Monday night as the Eagles fell by 22 (68-44) to Clarke Prep School in Jackson. Donald was the leading scorer with 11, Harris added nine, Hughston eight and McVay two for the Eagles.
