Alabama Cattlemen's Association (ACA) Vice President and Leroy native Dr. Billy Powell stressed the importance of the organization's youth programs during the annual meeting of the Washington County Cattlemen's Association (WCCA), Friday, Jan. 25 at the Chatom Community Center.

"We are doing a lot for youth at the state level," he said. "The state checkoff funds are used to fund youth programs. I commend what you are doing in this county to support these programs here in Washington County." Powell went on to point out that a total of 30 agriculture-related scholarships were awarded last year. "These young people are the future of this industry," he added.

Price and demand for beef

"Cattle prices have had a good run for a number of years now," said Powell.

He pointed out that recently, the cost of production has been affected by the price of oil, but the demand for beef is still strong.

"Our nutritional marketing program has made great strides in the promotion of our product," he said.

Election of officers During the meeting, the WCCA elected its officers for 2008.

Layman Philips was named the organization's new president. Tommy Fuller was named first vice president. Carlton Butts, who was president in 2007, will serve as second vice president. Walt Richardson was elected to the third vice president position.

Named as members of the 2008 board of directors were Ed Turner, Lee Wright, Carlton Butts, Laymon Philips, Joe David Britton, Hilton Robbins, Chuck Reynolds, Worth Schultz, Rod Richardson, Timothy Sullivan, Billy Gant, Teddy Williams, John Beech and David Odom.
