Mardi Gras is coming to Chatom
By Evan Carden SA Editor

For the first time ever, the town of Chatom will host a Mardi Gras event, this Saturday, Feb. 2, which will include an afternoon parade through the streets of downtown.

The day's activities will begin with music, arts and crafts and food vendors set up on the courthouse lawn at 11 a.m. Adisc jockey will provide the music for the event from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m.

A parade, featuring all types of revelers, will begin at 2 p.m. and follow the normal parade route down Jefferson Avenue to Court Street, turning onto Central Avenue and back to St. Stephens Avenue. According to the event's co-chair, Carolyn Carpenter, she was recently contacted by Mayor Harold Crouch about helping to organize the event. She and co-chair Lisa Beech set out to make the event one to remember.

Well-known Chatom resident and Washington County icon Edith Wilcox will serve as the parade's grand martial. The theme for this inaugural parade is "Let the Good Times Roll."

A number of groups will participate in the event, such as the Crew of Medical Mystics from the Washington County Hospital, the Bookworms from the Washington County Public Library, the Order of the Sandbar from Peavy's Landing and many more.

The Cha-Cha Girls of Chatom will operate several arts and crafts booths as part of their fund-raising efforts for this year's Washington County Relay for Life. Area churches will sell Valentine's boxes. Cotton candy and funnel cakes will be offered by several vendors to satisfy those craving something sweet.

"We encourage everyone to put on their purple, green and gold and come out and enjoy the fun," said Carpenter. "There will be plenty of hoolahoops, beads and other treats flying from the floats as they roll through downtown Chatom."
