JHS seniors recognized as Aggies sweep Escambia
Lady Aggies recognized were Genesis Bernard, Brittanee Crayton, Anna Jackson (manager) and Raven Tiggs. Varsity boys recognized were Darius Austin, Eddie Bettis, B.J. Brown, Joshua Ezell, Brock Johnson, Alex Perine, Broderick Washington and Roderick Washington. Senior cheerleaders recognized were Pilar Bendolph, Danielle Gill, Ashley Jordan, Hayley Pittman, Marnita Stallworth and Mimi Staples. The Jackson varsity boys knocked off Escambia but fell to Monroe to fall to 15-6 on the season and 3-2 in area play. B.J. Brown nailed a threepointer with 17 seconds remaining in the game to tie the score 50-50 Tuesday, Jan. 15 at Monroe. But an Aggie foul sent the Tigers to the line with 2.5 second left. They were able to make one of the two free throws to prevail with the one point win. Corey Besteda led the way with 12 points for Jackson while Josh Ezell added 10. "Poor officiating really hurt us in this game," Aggie coach Marcus Caster said." Jackson rebounded on senior night with a 70-68 win over Escambia. Gabriel Mass was 14-15 from the charity stripe and led the Aggies with 18 points. Ezell added 17 and Besteda 12 to round out the top scorers. "Overall the week went well. I wished we could have picked up a win at Monroe to sew the area up," Caster said. Jackson was scheduled to travel to Thomasville Tuesday, Jan. 22 with the winner wrapping up the area championship. The Jackson Lady Aggies continued their recent roll with wins over Monroe and Escambia to bring their record to 10-10 and 4-1 in area play. On Jan. 15 the Lady Aggies knocked off Monroe in 32-34 in a low-scoring defensive struggle. Jackson held onto a two-point lead at 16-14 at intermission. Genesis Bernard had 11 points for the Aggies. Scoring was a little easier for JHS against Escambia on Friday with the Lady Aggies picking up a 63-46 victory. Bernard had 23 points, Raven Tiggs 13, Angelica Leggett 12 and Brittannee Crayton 11. "We picked up two big wins this week," Aggie coach Trinnia McKenzie said. "We are right where we want to be at 4-1 in area play. If we win at Thomasville (Jan. 22) we will be tied for first in the area," she said.
The Lady Aggies were scheduled to travel to Thomasville with a win placing them in first place in the region.
