Area players shine at Scout.com-Under Armour combine
Quarterback Clint Moseley and Aerik Davis of Leroy, wide receiver Corey Besteda and defensive lineman Gabriel Mass of Jackson and Thomasville defensive back Alex Buford all attended. They showcased their skills to the Scout.com recruiting analysts who came in from all across the country and was decked from head-to-toe in Under Armour gear in what has become the nation's most elite football combines. "I thought all those guys had really good camps," Jason Caldwell of Inside the Auburn Tigers and Scout.com said. "Gabriel Mass is one of the guys that really stood out to me. He is really athletic, big, has great strength and did a great job in the one-on-ones's. He is an interesting prospect with good upside. We will keep our eyes on him," Caldwell said. Andrew Bone of Scout.com had this to say about Thomasville's Alex Buford. "I thought he was one of the top five defensive backs at the camp. And that says a lot." Another Jackson star receiving praise was 6-3, 188-pound Corey Besteda. He turned in one of the fastest times in the 40 and was picked as one of the top receivers in the camp by Scout.com. "The weather was an element with a cold, breezy day in Mobile. Their 40-yard dash times will not show as well, but college coaches take that into consideration when we post results. If a wide receiver is out here and ran between a 4.65 and a 4.75, it's a good time, " Bone said. Leroy quarterback Clint Moseley also turned in a solid camp. Moseley said it took a little getting used to as it was his first time taking part in such an event. "I was not very good at first. I settled down about halfway through and was doing about as good as I can toward the end," Moseley said. One of the camp's top overall performers was St. Paul High School's A.J. McCarron. The Scout.com four-star quarterback wooed the scouts all day with crisp throws that showed why he is considered the top quarterback in the South for the Class of 2009. South Choctaw Academy's offensive lineman Austin Butler made the trip to Mobile for his first taste of big time football. The 6-2-283 pound lineman held his own against some of the top defensive line prospects from around the South. "I thought he did pretty wel," SCA coach Charlie Taylor said. "He really surprised me. He really showed good footwork," he said. Butler was going up against some mammoth lineman like 6- 7, 327-pound Foley and Alabama verbal commitment D.J. Fluker. The four-star tackle who sports a size 22 shoe was held out most of the day because of a shoulder injury during the regular season but managed to go through one-onone's. Scout.com five-star defensive tackle Chris Davenport from Mansfield High School in Louisana. was another one of the camps standouts. "We had an outstanding group from six states with the Alabama high school players as a majority of the combine participants.
"All players from Alabama who participated will find their profile page with picture included at ScoutSouth.com later this week with updates throughout the year of their recruitment," Bone said.
