Lady Bears win area with win over Flomaton The Leroy Lady Bears won the 2A Area 1 championship with a 61-40 win over Flomaton Friday, Jan. 18 in Leroy. The win improved Leroy's record to 12-7 and 6-0 in area play. Ada Collins was the leading scorer with 24 points while Shaniqua McMorris added 12. The McIntosh Demons won their 55th straight game with a 90-57 win over Leroy Saturday, Jan. 19. Velencia Reed had 23 points, Brittany Simmons picked up her ninth career triple double with 21 points, 15 rebounds and 13 assists, Jakia Reed had 18 points and 14 rebounds while Xavier Barnes added 18 for the Demons. "We have been playing hard and have been able to execute." Leroy coach Connie Snow said. "That has been the difference between winning and losing," he added. The Leroy varsity boys basketball team knocked off the Flomaton Hurricanes but fell at home to McIntosh to fall to 5-9 on the season and 3-3 in area play. The week started off good with a 69-62 victory over Flomaton at home. Lawrence Powell had 17 points while Patrick Rivers, Josh Trotter and Jerome Taylor added 10 points each. McIntosh upended the Bears 73-63 Saturday in Leroy. Terold Reed had an outstanding night for the Demons with 23 points and 23 rebounds. Darrell Thomas had 18 points and Kali Crayton 12 for the Demons. Patrick Rivers led Leroy with 20 points while Derrick Johnson chipped in with 14. "We are giving up too many points," Leroy coach Brian Henry said "When teams are making it to the free throw line 15 times more than us you aren't going to win," he said.
Jackson hosted Washington County Tuesday, Jan. 22. The area tournament begins Wednesday, Jan.29 in Leroy.
