Area Obituaries Vera Lee Dean Vera Lee Roberts Dean, a native of McIntosh, died Jan. 19, 2008 at the age of 71. She was the daughter of the late Henry Roberts Jr. and Martha Shearls Roberts. After the death of her mother, the late Sally Shearls Roberts and the late Antonio Roberts reared Vera and her sister, Inez Roberts Curtis. A 1955 honor graduate of McIntosh Union High School, Mrs. Dean received both a bachelor of science and a master's degree in elementary educational administration from Alabama State University, formerly known as Alabama State Teacher's College. She also received a master's degree in special education and an AA certification (sixth year program) in supervision and administration from the University of South Alabama, where she became a member of the National Society of Alpha Kappa Alpha, as well as additional studies at Murray State College in Murray, Ky. Serving in many capacities during her long tenure with the Washington County School System, she was the first special education teacher employed by the county system; served as a Head Start teacher; taught secondary English and physical education at McIntosh High School; was principal of Frank W. Boykin Elementary School in McIntosh; supervisor of curriculum and instruction for grades K-8 at the central office; and was a member and president of the Washington County School Board. Other professional affiliations included: the Washington County Retired Teachers' Association, National Education Association, Alabama Association of School Boards, National Association of School Boards and facilitator and chairperson for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. A leader for change and improvement in the McIntosh community and for Washington County, she served on the Washington County Mental Health Board, collaborated to establish the McIntosh Area Betterment Association, was inducted into the Washington County Hall of Fame, was the founder and director of the Adventures in Cultural Experiences, a program providing cultural activities for youth and adults of all races in the McIntosh community. She was a den mother for Boy Scout Troop No. 223 and the first Girl Scout leader for Troop No. 443 at McIntosh High School. Her brother, Henry Roberts Jr, preceded Dean in death. Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Leo C. Dean of McIntosh; daughter, Tracey Lynn Broussard of Mobile; three grandchildren, Ronald Broussard Jr., Alexis Lee Broussard and John Glenn Broussard of Mobile; three stepchildren, Brenda (Carl) Dean of Marietta, Ga., Leo (Crystal) Dean Jr. of Gary, Ind., Bridgette (Reaid) Elgenema of Montreal, Canada; stepmother, Ernestine Roberts of Detroit, Mich.; seven sisters, Inez (George) Curtis and Ida Mae Adams, both of McIntosh, Leola (Cleveland) Flott of Mt. Vernon, Voncille (Carl) Bonner, Lucille Lucas, Harlan (Anthony) Humes and Valarie Hill, all of Detroit Mich.; six brothers, Eugene (Dorothy) Roberts and Everett Lee (Julia) Roberts, both of Detroit, Michael Bernard (Deborah) Roberts of Dallas, Texas, Ronald (Delores) Roberts, Renard (Donna) Roberts and Alex Roberts, all of Detroit; one foster sister, Helen (Edward) Willis of Montgomery; nieces, Youlanda D. Curtis of McIntosh; Deatra Adams of Nashville, Tenn., Carmen (Marvin) Caldwell of Birmingham and Raphaella Archie of Saraland; two aunts, Alice Johnson of McIntosh and Rebecca Roberts of Mobile; one devoted friend, Mamie Allen and a special cousin, Clarice Wiley; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be Sat. Jan. 26, 11 a.m. at the St. Union Baptist Church in McIntosh with Elder Al Clyde Sauls officiating. Viewing will be Friday, noon until 7 p.m., at Andrews Funeral Home of Jackson. A second viewing will be Saturday from 9 until the 11 a.m. service. Interment will be in Roberts Cemetery in Agee Johnson Sr. Agee Johnson, Sr. 90, a native and resident of the Ebenezer community, died Jan. 15, 2008 at Infirmary West Hospital in Mobile. He was the son of the late Annanias Johnson and Elmira Carriesanda Brown Johnson. A lifelong member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in the Ebenezer community, he retired after working many years as a cook on the dredge boat, Congoria. He was preceded in death by his wife, Reaner Howze Johnson; two sisters, Elmira Johnson and Thelma Pullom; and one brother, Phillip Johnson. Survivors include five sons, Willie (Bettye) Johnson of Montgomery, Agee (Helen) Johnson Jr. and Clifford (Lela) Johnson, both of Winn, Robert Lee (Debra) Johnson of Jackson and Nelson (Lanese) Johnson of Mobile; seven daughters, Ethel Mae (Frank) Morrissette and Marsena (Charlie) Pugh, both of Winn, Rosa Mae (Marvin) Robinson of Jackson, Annie Doris (Dr. David) Franklin of Plymouth, N.C., Mary Ellen Ellis of Bowie, Md., Myra (Johnnie) Brown of Mobile and Joneen Morris of Houston, Texas; 61 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends. Services were Saturday, Jan. 19, at Ebenezer Baptist Church with the Rev. Albert Ridgeway, pastor and eulogist. Pallbearers were his grandsons. Interment was in the Ebenezer Cemetery with Andrews Funeral Home of Jackson directing. Earnest Junior Harvison Earnest Junior Harvison, died at a local hospital on Jan. 18, 2008 at the age of 74. A native of Fruitdale and resident of Chatom, he was a member of Reynolds Holiness Church in Chatom. Mr. Harvison was disabled and a former truck driver for Price Logging. He was also a private-2 in the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean Conflict. Survivors include his wife, Hazel Harvison of Chatom; six sons, Wayne Harvison and Glenn Harvison, both of Chatom, Doyle Harvison, Daniel Harvison and Jeff Harvison, all of Silas and Anthony Dozier of Mobile; two daughters, Harlene Dunn of Millry and Teresa Harvison of Mobile; 17 grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren. Funeral services were Jan. 20 at Reynolds Holiness Church with the Revs. Troy Bailey and Gerald Beech officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery with Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson directing. Active pallbearers included Larry West, Lesli Brown, Kelsey Cunningham, Evon Sullivan, Chad Singleton and Hoss Sanderson. Bertie Catherine Wilson Bertie Catherine Wilson, a native and resident of Grove Hill, died at the age of 87, Jan. 21, 2008. She was a retired seamstress for Vanity Fair Mills in Jackson and a member of the Grove Hill Baptist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Captoria (John) Larrimore of Dickinson; a brother, Wilton (W.D.) Brunson of Foley; three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were Jan. 23 at the Grove Hill Baptist Church with the Revs. Randy Boone and John Copeland officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery with Lathan Funeral Home of Grove Hill directing. Active pallbearers were Ray Brunson, Wayne Brunson, Andy Brunson, Mike Brunson, Donald Dunagan and Charlie Harris. Honorary pallbearers included Ms. Wilson's Grove Hill Baptist Church Sunday School class. Elvin Eugene Bradley Elvin Eugene Bradley died Jan. 19, 2008, at his home in Wagarville, at the age of 80. A veteran of the Korean Conflict, he was retired from construction and his hobbies included carpentry and farming. Two brothers, Tommy Bradley and Robert L. Bradley Jr. and two grandchildren preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife, Frances Allday Bradley of Wagarville; a daughter, Jewel (Danny) Fleming of Monroeville; five sons, the Rev. George (Peggy) Guy of Perrys Chapel, Jake (Bonnie) Guy Sr. of Leroy, the Rev. David (Jane) Guy Sr. and Blane (Tina) Guy, both of Jackson and Allen (Elaine) Guy of Wagarville; two brothers, Vernon Bradley and Carl Bradley, both of Jackson; two sisters, Dot (Ray) Beck and Minnie Jean (A.G.) Beck, both of Jackson; 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one greatgreat grandchild. Funeral services were Jan. 21 at the Clearwater Assembly of God Church in Wagarville with the Revs. Jimmie Butts and David Guy Sr. officiating. Interment was in the Clearwater Cemetery in Wagarville with St. Stephens Funeral Home directing. Pallbearers were Jake Guy Jr., David Guy Jr., Chad Fleming, Paul Guy, Danny Bradley and Daryl Beck. Honorary pallbearers included Pete Jordan, Jeff James, Kristopher Guy and Brandon Guy. Nimoy M. Pugh Nimoy M.Pugh, 39, of Savoy, Ill., died Monday, Jan. 21, 2008 at Provena Covenant Medical Center in Urbana, Ill. Dawson & Wikoff Funeral Home of Mt. Zion, Ill. , will be handling the arrangements. A complete obituary will be published at later date. Lura Vance James Lura Vance Drinkard James, a Clarke County native and Fulton resident, died Jan. 3, 2008 at Southwest Alabama Medical Center in Thomasville. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church of Fulton. She was 90 years of age. Preceding her in death were her husband, Dannie Lee James and daughter, Edna Earl Jones. She is survived by three sons, James R. (Imogene) Drinkard and Donald J. (Sharon) James, both of Fulton and Robert E. (Sandra) James of Dothan; five daughters, Mary E. (Bennie) Pugh of Jackson, Patsy J. (Edward) Fisher of Pensacola, Emma J. (Billy) Criswell and Mildred R. (Warren) Shewmake, both of Fulton and Judy (Jim) Thompson of Vineland; 23 grandchildren, 27 greatgrandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral services were at First Baptist Church of Fulton on Jan. 5 with the Rev. John Copeland and the Rev. Warren Shewmake officiating. Burial was in the Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery in Thomasville with O'Bryant Chapel Funeral Home directing.
Pallbearers were Rickey James, Todd Pugh, Eddie Fisher Jr., Lynn Criswell, Johnny Criswell, Shawn James, Jimmy Thompson and Kenny Drinkard. Honorary pallbearers were Curtis James, Perry James, Danny James, Neal James, Tony Pugh, Troy Pugh, Jeff Shewmake and James Shewmake.
