Poll workers recognized during WashCo DEC meeting
By Evan Carden SA Editor

Special recognition was given to Washington County's poll workers during the meeting of the Washington County Democratic Executive Committee (WCDEC) Jan. 17, at the Chatom Community Center.

WCDEC Chairman Tommy Fuller introduced those who have served as poll workers from zero to more than 50 years. Virginia Hudson, 81, of Charity Chapel is the longest serving poll worker, with 53 years of service.

Mamie Chestang, 78, was recognized as the second longest poll worker with 47 years of service.

Jimmie Dale Moseley of St. Stephens, has served for 40 years.

Later, Fuller said the recognitions were a way of showing appreciation regardless of party affiliations or loyalties.

A large number of county officials were present for the meeting as well as several candidates seeking offices in the upcoming elections.

Joe Turnam, state chairman of the Alabama Democratic Executive Committee, was the special guest for the evening. Also attending was Sim Petway, Southwest Alabama field organizer for the Alabama Democratic Executive Committee.

Those attending the meeting were treated to a covered dish supper prepared by many of the women.
