Leadership Washington announces youth program Efforts toward the formation of Leadership Washington (LW) began with an interested group of individuals who met in 2003 to discuss the formation of a community development leadership program. The inaugural class of Leadership Washington was assembled in September 2004 bringing that original effort to completion. Now the original organization is embarking on a new task: that of creating a Youth Leadership Washington which will be open to high school sophomores and juniors. Janie Stephens of Chatom, chairperson of Leadership Washington, announced this week the reciept of a Rural Initiative Grant "to organize a Youth LW to mirror the goals and objectives of the adult program." LWwas designed to represent a cross-section of organizations, businesses and entities in Washington County. The members participate in a nine-month curriculum to network and learn more about Washington County, its history, economy, opportunities and challenges. Additionally, each year's class would adopt one or more service projects to make a significant positive contribution back to the community. The Youth LW class will be limited to 15 participants. Applications were delivered to schools this week and counselors will collect them by Jan. 23. Applicants will undergo an interview and those selected will be notified by Jan. 29. Students must have a C (2.5) grade-point average and complete a form listing their leadership activities in school and church, as well as any work or volunteer experience. Diversity will be a determining factor in selection of participants and "many qualified candidates may not be chosen for inclusion." They are encouraged to re-apply in subsequent years.
Stephens says the grant was made available through the office of Arthur Threat, County Coordinator of Auburn Extension Service.
