By Ellen Williams

Presenting Jacob Scurlock, (right) a certificate for his writing skills are Marie Sheffield, Billy Allday.
Jacob Scurlock won second place in the VFW's district essay contest this year after having won third place last year. On Jan. 17, Scurlock was awarded a certificate naming him "a spokesman for freedom" at the Jackson VFW Post by Post Commander, Billy Allday and Secretary/Treasurer Marie Sheffield. Additionally, he received a cash honorarium from the local VFW Post, the Ladies Auxiliary and Merchants Bank.

The subject for this year's contest was "Honoring our Veterans," and Scurlock's essay began with the Revolutionary War soldiers and continued to the present.

He spoke of the loss of life in the several wars and spoke of the debt we owe all veterans as he read his essay to those gathered for the occasion.

He competed against students in VFW District 6, which includes, Demopolis, Butler, Aliceville, Marion, Thomasville, Linden, Reform, Lisman and Tuscaloosa. Scurlock is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Scurlock of Jackson and attends Solid Rock Christian Home School.
