Williams commits to Duke
Williams becomes the first verbal commitment for new Duke coach David Cutcliffe, who was previously the offensive coordinator for Tennessee. "I prayed all night and asked God if I should consider myself as a 'Duke Blue Devil', after that it was clock work," Williams said. "I called my mom while I was in a meeting with Coach Cutcliffe Sunday morning to tell her I committed and she was thrilled. She said she loved the coach and can not wait to meet him. Who ever thought I would be going to Duke University, besides God Himself." Ron Middleton, who left Alabama earlier this month to join Cutcliffes' staff at Duke was a key reason for Williams becoming a Blue Devil. "They just started recruiting me when Coach Middleton was hired," he said. "When he got there he showed them my highlight film and they liked me. Coach Middleton called me, but I never answered the phone because I didn't recognize the phone number. "I finally answered and Coach Mid was like, 'I know you're not hiding from a scholarship.' When he said that, I asked him for where and he told me it was for Duke. "I just started screaming and hollering and jumping around because I was so excited to get the offer. I had been dreaming about going to Duke since I was a little boy. When I was little I thought I was going to grow up and play basketball at Duke, but I realized basketball wasn't my sport and that God had blessed me with an ability to play football," Williams said. Williams sat out five games this season with a groin injury. He plans on heading to Duke this summer to enroll in school. He said the Duke training staff plans to work with him over the summer to increase his flexibility and to prevent further problems from resurfacing with his groin.
Williams, despite missing several games, still managed to haul in 15 receptions for 265 yards and a touchdown for the 2A State champion Leroy Bears in 2008.
