Besteda free throw sinks Tigers
JHS traveled to Escambia Tuesday, Jan. 8, and fell by one point to the Blue Devils. The game was tied 27-27 at intermission in the see-saw affair. Jackson, clinging to a 60- 59 lead with 5.8 seconds left in regulation, made a critical foul to send an Escambia County player to the line with a shot to win the game. The Blue Devil sunk both free throws to put Escambia up by one point. Josh Ezell put up a desperation shot that rimmed out on the ensuing possession but Corey Besteda was there for the put back for what would have been the game-winner. The only problem was the referees said the shot did not beat the buzzer resulting in a tough area loss for the Aggies. B.J. Brown was the leading scorer with 15 points. Besteda added 14, Gabriel Mass 11 and Ezell 10 for Jackson. Friday night the Aggie's rebounded with a thrilling 49-48 win over the fifth-ranked and previously unbeaten (10-0) Thomasville Tigers. Besteda was able to avenge his near buzzer beater against Escambia with a clutch free-throw with 2.2 seconds left in the game to seal the victory for the Aggies. Besteda had a game-high 15 points for Jackson including the game-winning free throw. Brown had 12 points and Mass added nine for the surging Aggies. "It was the same old song," Aggie coach Marcus Castor said of his teams' week. "Free throws were key. This is the first year that the area has not been lopsided. All the teams are equal.
"The games are boiling down to who executes at the end.Three out of the four team's in the area have been ranked in the top 10 this year. That really says something about the area we play in," Castor said.
