Kendall Bush of the Alabama Department of Public Health announces that Washington County and the town of McIntosh have received grants totaling $33,091.20 and $4,565.80 respectively. These grants have been made possible as a result of eight southwest Alabama counties affected by Hurricane Katrina being designated eligible for assistance to aid in establishing and enhancing mosquito abatement programs; and through the cooperative efforts of the federal, state, area and local agencies.

This grant was secured from the CDC through the Alabama Department of Public Health's Epidemiology Division. The grant will allow Washington County and McIntosh to purchase needed equipment and chemicals to enhance existing mosquito control programs and to help establish a primary mosquito control program for Washington County.

The Washington County Health Department will provide assistance to these programs by providing a seminar on the operation and use of the equipment as well as effective techniques in mosquito control. David Kelly, Washington County Environmental Officer, and others associated with Alabama Public Health will conduct the seminar whose date will be announced in March.
