Native American artifact show is Jan. 27 in Jackson Those interested in prehistoric Native American history should plan on attending a free artifact show Jan. 27, 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the H.W. Pearce Memorial Park Assembly House in Jackson. The assembly house is located on Vanity Park Drive, which is the road that goes through the golf course and pool area. Twenty to 30 exhibitors will be displaying their collections. This is one of the largest displays of privately owned artifacts in the southeastern United States. Artifacts range in age from a few hundred to 15,000 years old. Projectile points, pottery, axes (stone and iron), pipes and knives are just a few of the many items on display. The show is sponsored by the Rebel State Archeological Society of Alabama which has over 250 active members, sponsoring several shows each year. One of the goals of the society is to preserve, conserve and display artifacts that have been found on the surface of the ground. Illegal digging is not tolerated and can result in being permanently banned from the society.
The show is free and open to the public. Bimbo Kohen, president of the Rebel State Archeological Society of Alabama, will be hosting the event. For further information or to display a collection of your own, contact Kohen at 251-542-9456 or e-mail bimbo@millry. net.
