Jackson family challenges residents to collect school supplies for Iraqi students
Amy Sayne, whose husband, Riley will end a one-year stint in Iraq this June, and their four children encourage local schools, churches, civic organizations and individuals to collect much needed school supplies for the education system in Iraq. "It's difficult for us to realize how bad the students there have it," said Amy. "In some incidents, there isn't even one box of crayons for an entire classroom." Lt. Riley Sayne is serving with the 1203rd Engineering Battalion, based in Dothan. He is currently working with the IED Defeat/Fusion Cell as the public affairs and safety officer. A large part of his job involves visiting students at the schools and reading to them. He and the other soldiers who go into the schools, do so in full combat gear, so the children will learn not to be afraid of them. Lt. Sayne has taken on the mission of collecting school supplies as well. Jackson Academy has already taken on the challenge presented by the Saynes. Between Feb. 4-15, the Student Government Association (SGA) will be collecting school supplies to send to several Iraqi schools in support of the 1203rd. The SGA decided to make the project a fun one by turning it into a competition between each of the classes 4K-12. The classes in the elementary and high school that raise the most supplies will be treated to an ice cream cake from Dairy Queen. Supplies needed are: •Pocket folders •Crayons (no bigger than 24-count) •Markers •Packs of pencils •Scissors •Packs of pens (red, blue and black) •Rulers •Colored pencils •Erasers •Spiral notebooks •Glue sticks (no liquid glue) Amy Sayne said supplies can be sent to: Attention Lt. Riley Sayne, HHC 1203rd ENB, APO AE 09391. For more information contact Sayne at Jackson Academy at 246-5552. "All we hear about in the media are the bad things going on in Iraq," added Amy. "There is a lot of good going on over there and our military is making progress. This gives people the opportunity to help in a positive way."
The Saynes' children are Jackson, Marybeth, Rileyann and McKenzie.
