Annual events to mark MLK Day

Two annual events to celebrate the achievements and vision of Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be conducted in Jackson Monday, Jan. 21.

The first will be a motorcade that will begin at Joe M. Gillmore Elementary School and progress through downtown, followed by a memorial service at Mt. Olive No. 2 Missionary Baptist Church. Both are sponsored by the Free Mission District Association Youth Department.

Lineup for the motorcade will begin at 9 a.m. The procession will be at 10 a.m.

Thaddeus Douglas, associate pastor at Mt. Olive No. 2 will be the featured speaker for the memorial service. The youth and children divisions of the association will present their annual program entitled, "We Can't Afford to Forget."

The second event will be the annual MLK Day March sponsored by Genesis Inc. Lineup will be at 3:45 p.m. in front of Jackson Middle School. The march will progress through downtown to Jackson City Hall.

Speaker for the event will be the Rev. Cleveland R. Williams. AMobile native, he is a product of the public school system and attended Bishop State Community College for one year.

Williams' college educations was interrupted by two years of military service when he completed a tour of duty in Korea. Following his discharge from service, he continued his education at Virginia Union University in Richmond, Va., where he earned a bachelor's degree in sociology and a master of divinity degree in Christian ministry.

The Rev. Williams has served as pastor for churches in Virginia, New Jersey and Washington D.C. In addition to his work as a minister, he spent many years as a social worker in Philadelphia, Pa. and Washington D.C.

Returning to Mobile for his retirement, Williams currently serves as interim pastor of Pine Chapel Baptist Church No. 2 in Toddtown.
