ARP offers technology scholarships March 1, 2008 is the deadline to apply for five technology scholarships to Alabama Southern Community College offered annually by Alabama River Pulp Company, Inc. The scholarships are available for The college's two-year Paper & Chemical Technology (PCT) Program and will be awarded to five qualified students in Monroe, Conecuh, Clarke or Wilcox counties. The PCT Program is a partnership between the college, the Alabama Technology Network and regional industries, including Alabama River Pulp. It is designed to provide education and training to prepare students for jobs in today's high-technology workplace. Criteria for a student to be considered for an ARP/ASCC Technology Scholarship include: • Must be a high school senior with a GPA of 80 or better and a minimum score of 18 on the ACT, or a full-time student enrolled in ASCC's PCT program with a 2.5 GPA. • Aletter of recommendation is required from each of the following: a principal/guidance counselor or academic advisor, a math/science teacher, and a community representative • Participation in an Interview with ARP representatives (arranged by the college). • Application submitted by March 1 of each year. Each scholarship recipient is awarded $4,500 per year (maximum of $9,000 over two years) for tuition, books, course fees, supplies, and other approved expenditures. To maintain the scholarship, the recipient must be enrolled full-time in the Pulp and Paper Technology Program at ASCC; maintain at least a 2.5 GPA and they must commit to a paid internship with ARP for a minimum of eight weeks upon completion of their freshman year or during summer semester after receiving the scholarship in the fall. (The internship does not guarantee a job with ARP/APP.) The PCT program leads to an associate in applied science degree in two years. Applications for the Technology Scholarships are available through the registrar's office at Alabama Southern Community College's Monroeville or Thomasville campuses (251-575-3156) and from guidance counselors at high schools in the four eligible counties.
All scholarship packets must be postmarked by March 1, 2008. The scholarships are awarded each spring.
