'Disciple Now '08' at First Baptist Church

"Disciple Now '08" is scheduled for Jan. 25-27 at First Baptist Church in Jackson. This is an event for youth in grades 6- 12 to fellowship, have fun and grow in their relationship with Christ.

During the weekend, students will be housed in homes according to grade levels, as well as participating in worship services and activities at First Baptist. The theme for the weekend is RENOVATE, based on the Scripture 2 Corinthians 5:17

The special guest speaker will be Chad Poe from Chattanooga, Tenn., camp pastor at the youth camp, Centifuge. Special guessts for music will be Steve "Opie" Thomas and his band. Opie also led worship at the same summer camp.

FBC students, parents and staff invite all youth in the surrounding area to participate. Registration will continue at First Baptist Church through Jan. 25. Applications are available in the church office. Cost for the weekend is $20 and includes all meals, a T-shirt and all other weekend activities. There will be a late registration on Thursday night, Jan. 24 at 6 p.m. with a challenge given for the weekend. All are invited to attend.

Wagarville Baptist sponsors park cleanup

A cleanup day had been planned on Saturday, Jan. 26 for the old Wagarville School playground and ballpark. All Wagarville residents and those interested from around the area are asked to come and help restore the park.

Bring yard tools, gloves, garbage bags and a community spirit.

A marshmallow and hot dog roast will follow in the evening. The cleanup will begin at 8 a.m. and is sponsored by Wagarville Baptist Church. For more information call 251-533-7068.

Singing Valentines to benefit RCAC

Agroup of festive singers will deliver Valentine wishes in song, with a minimum of two songs, Thursday, Feb. 14, 8 a.m. - 1 p.m., at the location of your choice. The troubadours will deliver the singing Valentines to individuals for $20 and $50 for a group presentation. All proceeds will benefit the Regional Child Advocacy Center and are tax deductible.

Order forms are now available at the Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce, The South Alabamian or by contacting Earline Pearce, 246-4831 or Deloris Fleming, 246-5411. Orders must be received by noon, Wednesday, Feb.13.

Wild game cookout Jan. 26

The Lil' House of Barbecue, off Highway 84 in Coffeeville, will be the site of the Coffeeville Wild Game Cookout Saturday, Jan. 26 at 11 a.m. There will be food, entertainment and games for the kids. Everyone is invited to attend. For more information call 251-276-3421 or 251-231- 0617.

CCERA meets Jan. 17

The Clarke County Education Retirees Association will meet today (Jan. 17), 11:45 a.m. at The Garden in Thomasville. The District 6 director will present the program. Hosting the event will be Diane Downey, Barbara Ford, James Gunn, Janice Jackson and JoAnn Stephens.

Area III, which included the Clarke County Education Retirees Association, will also be conducting its 2008 AERA Lobbying Network meeting, beginning at 9:30 a.m., at Reid State Technical College in Evergreen.

Dr. Powell to speak at CCCA dinner

The Clarke County Cattlemen's Association will hold its annual steak dinner meeting Saturday, Jan. 26 at 6:30 p.m. at the Clarke Preparatory School in Grove Hill. Dr. Billy Powell, executive vice president of the Alabama Cattlemen's Association, will be the guest speaker. He is a native of Leroy.

Reunion planning meeting

A planning meeting will be conducted Sunday, Jan. 20, 5 p.m. at the Jackson Steakhouse for the Jackson High School Class of 1988 reunion. For more information contact Melissa McKee, 246-3713/769-6420 or Elizabeth Lawrence, 246- 7738/513-3784.

Fire fighting class continues

The Leroy Volunteer Fire Department is hosting a Wildland Fire Fighting class at the station through Jan. 18, 6-10 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 19, 8 a.m. until finished. Randy Kinman of the Alabama Forestry Commission will be the class instructor. Kinman was the 2003 Forestry Commission Ranger of the Year.

All area fire fighters are invited to attend.

Social assistance on Wednesdays at Salvation Army

The Salvation Army Social Service office is open on Wednesdays form 9-11 a.m. and 2-4 p.m. When in need of assistance with food and a variety of other needs, the office attempts to assist where they can. For additional information call 246- 5693.

Narcotics Anonymous meeting

Narcotics Anonymous will be meeting Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m., First Presbyterian Church, 302 E. Church St., Jackson.

Alcoholics Anonymous meetings

Alcoholics Anonymous meetings are conducted in the fellowship hall of Visitation Catholic Church, West Clinton Street in Jackson Wednesdays, 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays, 9 a.m.

Diabetes Classes

Diabetes classes will be conducted each Tuesday, 6:30 p.m. at the Jackson Medical Center. For additional information contact Rene' Forman, RN BSN, 251-246-9021.

Heart of Dixie Collectors Club meets last Monday of month

The Heart of Dixie Collectors Club will meet the last Monday of every month at the Jackson Steakhouse at 7 p.m. in the meeting room. Collectors of all types are welcome in sharing their knowledge and collections.

Some collections may include but are not limited to Indian artifacts, coins, postcards, old paper, books, bottles, advertising memorabilia, etc. For additional information contact Earl Handley at (251) 247-2438.
