Area Obituaries
Betty Lou Nichols, a native of Catherine and a resident of Jackson, died Jan. 4, 2008 at the age of 77 at a local hospital. A retired seamstress and supervisor for Vanity Fair Mills in Jackson, she was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Jackson. Her survivors include three sons, Charlie Nichols of Thomasville, David Nichols of Jackson and Bill Nichols of Birmingham; one brother, Holt Garrett of Thomasville; two sisters, Edith Wilson of Adamsville and Julia Ann Gregory Slaughter of Alabaster; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Graveside services were Jan. 7 at Trinity Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Jackson with the Rev. Dr. Tim Huie officiating. Arrangements were directed by Lathan Funeral Home in Jackson. Annie Bell Robinson Annie Bell Stringer Robinson died Jan. 4, 2008 at her Grove Hill home at the age of 86. She was a retired seamstress and supervisor for Vanity Fair Mills in Jackson and a member of the Asbury Baptist Church in Grove Hill. Ms. Robinson was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Annie Elizabeth Hicks Stringer; her husband, Harvey Clyde Robinson; a son, Earl Clyde Robinson; sister, Rennie Robinson; and brother, Roland Stringer. Survivors include three grandchildren, Robert Clyde (Pam) Robinson, Mary Ann Robinson (Kenny) Finch and Raymond Brent (Ramona) Robinson; four nieces, Frances Jackson, Jean Dameron, Jane Blanton and Carole Phipps; and daughter-in-law and guardian, Mary Dell Prater of Grove Hill, as well as other family members and dear friends. Funeral services were Jan. 7 in the chapel of Lathan Funeral Home of Grove Hill with the Rev. Carey Howard officiating. Interment was in the Grove Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers included Gerald Criswell, Tad Detlefeson, Jack Robinson, Delane Hicks, Samuel Jackson and Mabin Hicks. Honorary pallbearers were Carlos Newton, Sammy Fendley, Alphonso Wilson, Billy Robinson, Neal Hicks, Royce Bumpers, Eddie Slayton, Larry Hicks, Charles Hicks, Buster Hough, Sonny Creighton, Perry McClure, Dennis Powell, Lavon Hicks and Jimmy Knight. Mary Cathrine Woodard Mary Cathrine Land Woodard, a native of Choctaw County and a resident of Chillicothe, Ohio, died Jan. 3, 2008 at the age of 82 at her residence. She was a homemaker and a member of the Jones Chapel Church of Christ, but attended Highway 84 Church of Christ in Coffeeville. She was preceded in death by a stillborn son and two brothers and a sister, Edward Land, Frank Land and Rosalee Andrews, respectively. Survivors include her husband, Ossie E. Woodard of Columbus, Miss.; two daughters, Jeanette (Gary) Pendleton of Chillicothe, Ohio and Nancy (Charles) Slayton of Columbus, Miss.; three brothers, Gene Land, Cleat Land and Rudder Land, all of Gilbertown; a sister, Sara Ruth Daniels of Gilbertown; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services were Jan. 7 at Highway 84 Church of Christ with the Rev. Carl White officiating. Interment was in the Jones Chapel Church of Christ Cemetery in Coffeeville with Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson directing. George F. Woodham George F. Woodham, 81, a native and resident of Coffeeville, died at his residence Jan. 2, 2008. He was a retired route salesman for Dairy Fresh Milk, a WWII Army veteran and a member of the First Baptist Church in Coffeeville. He is survived by his wife, Eva M. Woodham of Coffeeville; one son, Ed Woodham of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Teresa Huckabee of Coffeeville; two brothers, Emelle Woodham of Daytona Beach, Fla. and Ben Woodham of Montgomery; sister, Virginia Green of Jackson; and three step-grandchildren. Funeral services were Jan. 4 at the Coffeeville Baptist Church with the Rev. Roscoe Wentworth officiating. Interment was in the New Prospect Cemetery in Coffeeville with Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson directing. Pallbearers were Brian Woodham, Rodney Woodham, Wesley Woodham, Gary Green, Mack May and Michael Henson. Honorary pallbearers were Lloyd Wilson, Lundy Scruggs, James Coate, Bob Burnham and Ernest Roberts. Shirley Shields Wright Shirley Shields Wright, died at the age of 72 in a Mobile hospital, Jan. 2, 2008. A native of Allen and a resident of Grove Hill, she was a member of the Grove Hill Baptist Church where she was active in the WMU and the church choir. She was secretary to the executive committee of the Alabama Baptist State Convention, former president of the Mission Belles, served as a substitute teacher at Clarke County High School for more than 25 years and was a member of the North Allen Homemakers Club. She had a master's of religious education degree from the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas and was a graduate of Blue Mountain College in Mississippi and Murphy High School in Mobile. Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Jack Wright Jr. of Grove Hill; three daughters, Kathy Wright Pickard of Grove Hill and Diane Wright Horton and Carol Leigh Wright, both of Birmingham; one son, Jack Russell Wright III of Grove Hill; a sister, Elizabeth Sharpe of Mobile; and eight grandchildren. Funeral services were Jan. 5 at Grove Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Al Dykeman officiating. Interment was in the Magnolia Lawn Cemetery in Grove Hill with Lathan Funeral Home of Grove Hill officiating. Pallbearers were Benjamin Pickard, Russ Wright, Charles Bouler, Larry Bagley, Doug Ramsay, Eddie Slayton, Tracey Newton and Dale Harris. Myrtis Bumpers Pugh Myrtis Bumpers Pugh, age 102, a native of Grove Hill and a resident of Aberdeen, Md., died Jan. 3, 2008 at Harford Medical Hospital in Havre de Grace, Md. She was predeceased by parents, Enda and Curtis Bumpers. A lifelong resident of Grove Hill until moving to Maryland five years ago with her daughter, she spent her life as a homemaker. She was a member of Mt. Zion No. 2 Missionary Baptist Church of Grove Hill. After moving to Aberdeen, she became a member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church. Her survivors include one daughter, Mary Pugh (Johnny) Law of Aberdeen; one brother, R.J. (Delia Mae) Bumpers of the Winn community; two grandchildren, Derricke A. (Ondrea) Law and Darnevy A. (Yolanda) Law; nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Services will be Saturday, Jan. 12, 11 a.m. from the Mt. Zion No. 2 Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Cory Pruitt, pastor, officiating. Viewing will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Walter Mission Church Cemetery in Zimco under the direction of Andrews Funeral Home in Jackson. Ruby Lee Davis Ruby Lee Williams Davis, 85, of Leroy, died Jan. 4, 2008 at Jackson Health Care in Jackson. She was a member of the St. Union Baptist Church of Leroy and served as a Sunday School teacher, choir member, secretary of the missionary department and a deaconess. Her husband, Percy Davis Sr.; her parents Versie and Monroe Williams; two brothers, Monroe Williams Jr. and Ed Williams; and one sister, Lela Mae Marshall, preceded her in death. Survivors include seven daughters, Versie Reed and Linda (Willis) Jones, both of Chicago, Ill., Betty Wiggins, Virginia Bundage and Mattie (Kenneth) Ganious, all of Houston, Texas, Kathy (Billy) Rodall of Abilene, Texas and Susan (Anthony) Phillips of Leroy; two sons, Percy Davis Jr. of Leroy and Tim (Pat) Davis of Houston; five sisters, Nellrie Davis of Leroy, Charlene (Marcus) Gross and Callie Lowrey, both of Gulfport, Miss. and Loraine Lacey and Bessie (Dollar) Boykin, both of Mobile; 26 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Visitation will be Friday, Jan. 11, 6-8 p.m. at the chapel of Jackson Memorial Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Saturday, Jan. 12 at 12 noon at St. Union Baptist Church of Leroy with interment following in the church cemetery. Laurie Nicole Barron Laurie Nicole Barron, 30, of Dothan, died Jan. 5, 2008 at her mother's residence in Troy. She was a member of the Elam Baptist Church in Elamville. Funeral services were Jan. 8 at the Elam Baptist Church with the Revs. Joe Underwood and Kenneth Earls officiating. Interment was in the Elam Church Cemetery with Keahey Funeral Home of Clio directing. Survivors include her mother and father, Cathy Key Cleiland of Troy and Eric Barron, respectively; a brother, Justin (Jennifer) Barron of Jackson; grandparents, Bernice and James R. Key of Clio; half-brother, Matthew Barron of Troy; aunts and uncles, Cheryl K. Roberson of Clio, Paulette and James P. Key of Troy, Dorothy and Jerry Key of Montgomery, Jan and Terry Key of Dothan and Maxine and Warren Barron of Goshen; special friends include Joy and Jay Nolin of Midland City and her physician, Dr. Steven Wise. Pallbearers were Taylor Trippe, Jason Trippe, Joshua Roberson, Brian Key, Jim Key and Fulton Robinette. Honorary pallbearer was David Key.
