The first fire occurred Thursday, Jan. 3, around 4:30 p.m. on Buite Road, which is located off John Johnson Road. According to McIntosh Fire Department Captain Steven Griffin, fire trucks were on the scene at 4:39, but the home was already fully involved.

April Back and two young children were reportedly inside the home asleep when the fire started. Griffin said thanks to a neighbor's quick thinking, the three were rescued from the home, but suffered some serious injuries.

The victims were transported by the McIntosh Rescue Squad to the Ciba helipad, where they were met by LifeFlight and MedeVac helicopters, which transported them to the University of South Alabama's burn unit. No further reports on their conditions were available.

"They were lucky," said Griffin. "If the neighbor had not woke them up, it could have turned out a lot worse."

McIntosh was assisted by Fairford Fire Department. Firefighters were on the scene for approximately 1-1/2 hours, but to no avail. The home was a total loss.

"We eventually got to the point where our main concern was saving the homes located nearby," added Griffin.

A second fire destroyed a mobile home on John Johnson Road, Friday, Jan. 4.

McIntosh firefighters responded to the blaze around 12:35 p.m. and found the structure fully involved. The home was unoccupied at the time.

The cause of the blaze was unclear, but Griffin stated that when cold weather hits, as it did last week, the chances of home fires increase due to the use of fireplaces and heaters. "People don't always use proper caution when operating heaters and fireplaces," he said. "They need to make sure there is enough clear space around them to avoid sparks from igniting carpet, rugs and other items."
