'Parent's night' designed to show industrial job opportunities in area Boise and other local industries will host "Parents Night" Jan. 24 at 6:30 p.m. in the Jackson High School auditorium. According to Boise's Marty Parker, who is also serving as this year's president of the Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce, Boise and many of the other local industries have an interest in the development of local students and citizens into a viable workforce pool that can be drawn from for future hiring opportunities. "We just want them to know there are other options that are offered through the two-year college system in our area," he said. "This is an opportunity for parents and citizens to find out what there is available as opposed to attending a major university. Everyone isn't cut out to go off to school. This gives them the option of earning a good living here at home." As part of the initiative representatives from area companies have been visiting high schools in Clarke and Washington counties, talking with guidance counselors to offer their assistance in educating students about these opportunities. "We would like to share that information and awareness with the junior and senior high school parents in the area as well as local citizens who would like to learn more about the subject," said Parker. Guest speaker for the event will be Bradley Byrne, the recently-appointed chancellor of the Alabama Junior College System. Major industries, along with Alabama Southern and Bishop State Community College will have displays at the event. Time will also be allotted for those in attendance to talk with industry and college representatives to ask questions and seek information.
A number of door prizes have been donated by the industries and will be given away throughout the program.
