Jackson and Coffeeville police departments receive grants

Two $25,000 grants to boost law enforcement efforts for the Jackson and Coffeeville police departments have been awarded through the office of Gov. Bob Riley.

Jackson Police Chief Charles Burge said the $25,000 grant received by his department will be used to purchase a fingerprint scanner.

The town of Coffeeville will use its $25,000 grant for the purchase of a new police car. It will replace a patrol car that is more than 10 years old with over 100,000 miles.

Chief Clint Harrell said, "I would like to thank the mayor and council of the town of Coffeeville for their support in obtaining this grant. I would also like to thank Kay Mullins of the First Judicial Circuit Drug Task Force for her help in preparing the grant application."

"Law enforcement agencies across Alabama are called upon daily to protect and serve those in their communities and often they are required to place their lives in danger," Riley said. "It is essential that we supply them with reliable equipment and transportation enabling them to efficiently perform their jobs."

Riley notified Jackson Mayor Richard Long and Coffeeville Mayor Fay Cotten that the grants had been awarded.

The grants were awarded from funds made available to the state from the U.S. Department of Justice. The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs will administer the grants.
