Wanted man tries to elude deputies

Washington County deputies arrested a Citronelle man after he tried to elude them at a roadblock.

Thomas Horace Byrd was turned over to Mobile County authorities on felony warrants and will face additional felony charges in Washington County.

According to Washington County Sheriff Richard Stringer, Byrd came upon the roadblock in Charity Chapel during the late night hours of Dec. 27 and turned his vehicle around. Deputy L.C. Howell gave chase, following him through a resident's yard.

Stringer said while being chased, Byrd attempted to dispose of a pistol and cocaine he had in his possession. Deputies located the items following the chase.

Byrd was wanted in Mobile County on felony warrants for discharging a firearm into a vehicle. He will now face charges in Washington County of being a felon in possession of drugs and a firearm.

Burglary suspect apprehended

In a separate incident, Dec. 23, Washington County deputies stopped a vehicle driven by Clifton Michael Uphaus, 23, of Eight Mile.

Inside Uphaus' vehicle officers found a large quantity of cigarettes, which were believed to have been stolen during a breakin at the Chevron service station located on Highway 45 at the Mobile-Washington counties' line.

Uphaus was turned over to Mobile County authorities and later released on bond.

Drugs found

at McIntosh residence

A Prichard man was arrested Dec. 20 after officers found what appeared to be illegal drugs in his possession at a residence where he was staying in McIntosh.

Gary Max Anderson, 47, was arrested after his parole officer contacted McIntosh Police and asked them to take him into custody for a parole violation.

Officers Lt. Mike Ready and Mike Brown went to a residence on John Johnson Road, where Anderson was known to be staying. According to Lt. Ready, when they entered the residence they found the suspect to be in possession of what they believed to be crack cocaine and a pipe used for smoking the illegal drug.

Anderson was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and tampering with evidence. Bond was set at $6,000.

Other arrests

Arrests reported by the Washington County Sheriff's Department during the past twoweek period include:

•Carl Henry Beech Jr., 22, of Spring Bank was arrested Dec. 19 and charged with third degree theft of property and violation of probation. Bond was set at $2,000.

•Billy Ray Strachan, 31, of Mobile was arrested Dec. 20 and charged with obtaining a controlled substance - fraud. Bond was set at $10,000. (Chatom and McIntosh P.D.)

•Wyatt Brady Sellers, 19, of Jackson was arrested Dec. 21 and charged with second degree possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Bond was set at $4,500.

•Jerry Devon Hopkins, 52, of Saraland was arrested Dec. 23 and charged with violation of probation, second degree possession of marijuana, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was ordered to see the judge.

•Robert Taylor, 26, of Eight Mile was arrested Dec. 25 and charged with failure to appear on a third degree domestic violence charge. Bond was set at $3,000.

•Rhonda Gay Jordan, 29, of Citronelle was arrested Dec. 27 and charged with failure to appear on a second degree possession of marijuana charge. Bond was set at $2,000.

•Gary Simpson, 23, of Citronelle was arrested Dec. 27 and charged with failure to pay on a possession of drug paraphernalia charge and violation of probation. He was ordered to pay $1,264.90.

•Otis Reed Jr., 21, of McIntosh was arrested Dec. 28 and charged with attempting to elude, reckless endangerment and violation of the prohibition law. Bond was set at $4,000.
