Turn signal will help at busy Jackson intersection During a short meeting of the Jackson City Council, Dec. 26, Mayor Richard Long informed those in attendance that a turn signal would be added to the traffic light at College Avenue and High Acres Drive. The mayor said the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) would also replace the existing bulbs in the town's traffic lights with LEDs. "The best thing is they will do this at no cost to the city," he added. Concerning traffic issues, Councilman Eddie Huggins brought up the fact that turn lanes are needed on U.S. 43 where parents turn to pick up their children from Jackson Intermediate School. "I've seen it when traffic will be backed up down 43," he said. "This presents a danger that I believe we need to address." Mayor Long agreed, adding that traffic counts indicate a significant increase in the number of motorists traveling through Jackson. He asked that Police Chief Charles Burge assign a couple of officers to patrol the area during dismissal times. In other business: •Huggins reported that there has been a delay in preparation of the North Jackson Little League fields. He said work on the irrigation system is expected to be completed around the first part of February. Little League tryouts are the first of March. •Huggins said that the Continuous School Improvement (CSI) program would start back the first of January. He said 100 students are signed up for the program, which is the full capacity. •Chief Burge reported that Deputy Chief Mark Harrell would attend the FBI Academy. •The police department has received a $25,000 grant from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) that Burge said will be used to purchase a fingerprint scanner. •The chief said he has received a number of complaints concerning motorists parking in the fire lanes at area shopping centers. He said the department will be cracking down on such illegal parking, giving motorists a grace period by issuing warnings. He added that he would have an article published in the local newspaper concerning this issue. (See related story elsewhere).
•Long said binding agreements for the new pellet plant planned for Jackson, would be considered at the Jan. 8 council meeting.
