A new series of books is available at White Smith Memorial Library by author Sharon Hersh. These books arm mothers with strategies to assist teenage daughters in facing the ups and downs of teenage life. More ... Pvt. Natosha Q. Gordon of Jackson, a member of Co. D, Unit 42 at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo., graduated Oct. 23, 2008 from Army basic training. Gordon, a 2007 graduate of Jackson High School, is the daughter of Bettie and Glenn Williams and Samson Jackson, all of Jackson. Her grandparents are Catherine and Richard Jackson of Jackson, and Ollie Gordon of Pittsburg, Pa. More ... On Tuesday, Nov. 4, Vicki Burge's class conducted an election. Students and teachers voted in the "Bug Party." Candidates running for president included Milli P. Long, a millipede, "Hops" Domino, a grasshopper, and Winston Dunghill, a dung beetle. The students researched the bugs, made signs and gave campaign speeches. They then registered voters and helped them in the voting process. Milli P. Long was the successful candidate for president. More ... class at Gillmore Elementary School participated in a unit on voting taught by Rachael Steed, a student from the University of South Alabama. Students participated in several elections ranging from favorite bugs to the presidential election between Barack Obama and John McCain.
