Child falls from float in Jackson parade
      A 2-1/2-year-old child was injured, Wednesday, Oct. 8, when he fell from a float in Jackson's Fire Prevention Parade. According to Jackson Police Chief Charles Burge, Vincent Morris, of Millry, slipped between the guardrails of the trailer, which was serving as the police department's float.

Oliver loved bringing joy to lives of hospice patients
      Agnes Oliver, who passed away last week at the age of 77, took great pleasure to brightening the lives of hospice patients. Oliver and her mother, Josephine Tillman, spent a good portion of their time addressing cards and sending them out to the terminally ill each week. They often mailed 80 or more at a time.

Clarke and WashCo discuss animal shelter
      Two members of the Clarke County Commission, Patricia DuBose and Elma Averett met with the Washington County Commission on Oct. 14 along with Dr. Ed Seller's to discuss a plan to build a regional animal shelter. DuBose explained that this project was a quality of life issue for the tri-county area, Clarke, Washington and Choctaw counties.

Litter committee wants input on problem areas
      The Clarke County Citizens Against Litter (CCCAL) is asking for input from county residents about roads in the county that may need to be picked up by the inmate crew from the county jail. A number of roads were identified by several committee members during its regular monthly meeting, Oct. 9, in the basement of the Clarke County Courthouse.

Annual checks presented
     The Jackson City Council presented its annual checks, totaling $50,000, to the public schools located within the city during Tuesday's council meeting. Jackson Woman's Club conducts Oct. meeting
      The Woman's Club of Jackson met Oct. 7 at the White Smith Memorial Library. Speakers for the event were Kasey Fleming, learning facilitator, and Therese Mayo, project manager with the Lindamood- Bell System. The program is currently being presented at Jackson Academy.

      We would like to thank the Wagarville, Leroy and McIntosh fire departments for their quick response to our house fire Sept. 15. AT&T tells ClarkeCo Commission of plans to expand services to offer TV
      Clarke County Commissioners heard Tuesday from Gigi Ambrecht of AT&T's Mobile office about AT&T's plans to launch a cable TV and high speed Internet service through its phone lines for its customers. AT&T is proposing to pay the county 5 percent of its gross revenues in exchange for a 10-year non-exclusive franchise.

First dog license sold
     Jackson Animal Control Officer Lee Hutto (left) presents Ward Jackson with a license for his dog. He was the first person in town to buy a dog license on Oct. 1, when they went on sell. The licenses are good through December of 2009. Dog owners need to bring proof that their dog has been vaccinated for rabies and proof that the dog has been spayed or neutered (lifetime license purchasers only) to Jackson City Hall. All dogs 4 months and older in the Jackson city limits are required wear the tags at all times. Annual tags are $5 and lifetime tags are $10. Senior Citizens are given a $2 discount. WashCo voter list incomplete/inaccurate
      Since June, Probate Judge Charles Singleton has been attempting to get state officials to listen to his pleas about the "mess" the Washington County voter registration records are in.

WashCo leaves Baxter/McIlwain open
      In compliance with state law, the Washington County Commission held a public hearing on Sept. 29 to hear citizen input about vacating (closing) the Baxter/McIlwain Road. The final decision regarding that matter was decided at the Oct. 14 commission meeting.

WashCo Firefighter of the Year
     Rodney Simpson (left), of the Charity Chapel Volunteer Fire Department, was named Firefighter of the Year during the Washington County Firefighters Association annual awards banquet Saturday, Oct. 11. He was presented the award by Alabama Fire College Executive Director Alan Rice. Other awards included Department of the Year - Wagarville; EMS of the Year - John L. Williams of McIntosh Rescue Squad; Officer of the Year - Judy Ard of Fruitdale VFD and Eric Sullivan, who received the Chief's Award. Below, lots of candy and other treats were tossed during the annual Washington County Fire Prevention Parade conducted in Chatom, Saturday, Oct. 11. Departments from all over the county participated.
