Man stabbed in altercation
      A Jackson man was treated, Friday, Sept. 26, at Jackson Medical Center, for stab wounds which resulted from an altercation. According to Jackson Police Chief Charles Burge, Margie Marie Thomas, 20, is accused of stabbing Michael Anthony Guy, 29, during an altercation that occurred around 12:32 a.m. in the 600 block of Vine Street.

WashCo Jail inmate dies
      A man incarcerated in the Washington County Jail died there, Friday, Sept. 26, around 10:45 p.m. According to Washington County Chief Deputy Terry Beasley, Shawn Woodard, 33, of Frankville died of what appears to be natural causes. "He suffered a breathing attack and the jailer was notified by other inmates in the cell," said the chief deputy.

Model for Clarke County animal shelter presented
      Clarke County Commissioner Elma Averitt told the county's animal shelter committee, Thursday, Sept. 25, that he hopes to have a building donated by the county to be used as an animal shelter.

Runoff to decide Grove Hill mayor, T'ville council races
      Grove Hill voters will return to the polls Tuesday to elect a mayor and voters in a Thomasville city council district will decide on a representative. Those are the only runoffs in the county from the Aug. 26 municipal elections.

Budget dominates continued WashCo Commission meeting
      The Sept. 22 Washington County Commission meeting was continued on September 29 and most of the meeting was taken up with the budget. Washington County Water Authority For several years, the county has been subsidizing the Washington County Water Authority (WCWA).

Black Alabamians voted for first time in Oct. 1867
      October 1-4, 1867: For the first time in Alabama history, African Americans vote in a statewide election. About 70,000 black men, the majority of voters in the election, called for a constitutional convention and elected an overwhelmingly Republican set of convention delegates, including 18 blacks. That convention produced Alabama's fourth constitution.

Opinions clash over road closing in Washington County
      On Sept. 29, a group of citizens, most of them descendants of the Azzie McIlwain family, a pioneer family in Washington County, were present at the courthouse to voice pros and cons at a public hearing to decide whether the county would abandon and close the Baxter/McIlwain Road.

Chatom man accused of sexually abusing young girl
      A Chatom man was arrested last week after being accused of sexually abusing a young girl in June. James (Jim) Lee Beech, 59, was arrested Friday, Sept. 26 and charged with sexual abuse of a child. He was released on $20,000 bond.

Millry police chief's wife found
      Sherry Harkless, wife of Millry Police Chief Larry Harkless, has returned home, according to the chief. Washington County Chief Deputy Terry Beasley reported that Harkless said he heard from his wife last Wednesday, but at that time she would not reveal where she was. Chief Harkless said his wife and son returned home Friday, Sept. 26.

      On Sept. 25, Washington County Probate Judge Charles Singleton chaired another meeting at McIntosh City Hall to continue efforts to begin construction of an industrial sewerage system for south Washington County.

Taking a realistic look at Washington County debt
      Many people have asked me about the county's debt and just how bad it is. Here is the debt for the Washington County Commission. The long-term debt is $3,417,000 and breaks down into three bond issues. All these are bonds that have been refinanced so as to achieve a lower interest rate when that is available. The 2001 bonds amount to $420,000.

On the campaign trail
     A group of statewide Republican candidates are conducting a 67-county bus tour called the "Hometown Connection." They made several stops in Clarke County Thursday, Sept. 25, visiting Jackson, Grove Hill and Thomasville. Participating in the tour are Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals candidates Beth Kellum and Mary Windom, Public Service Commission candidate Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh, Supreme Court candidate Judge Greg Shaw and Court of Civil Appeals candidate Judge Bill Thompson. Shaw and Thompson were unable to be present for the stops in Clarke County and were represented by Bill Goolsby. Two local Republican candidates were present at the Jackson stop. Chris Beverly, who is seeking his first full term as Clarke County Revenue Commissioner, was appointed to the post by Gov. Bob Riley upon the departure of Jay Duke who now serves as circuit clerk. Candidate for Clarke County License Commissioner, Jamie Wilkins, was also on hand. At each stop, candidates interact with voters and share their vision for the state, while, at the same time asking citizens to share their concerns, issues and ideas. The concept is to return to grassroots campaigning. WCDEC helps candidates/reviews court order
      The Washington County Democratic Executive Committee (WCDEC) met Thursday, Sept. 25 at the county courthouse. The Contributions Committee's report was to give each of the three county commissioners with opposition $500 to help with their campaigns.
