The Jackson Fire Department responded to a fire, Friday, Aug. 8, around 3:15 p.m., at the 815 Depot Road residence of Mary Gamble. Firefighters were on the scene for several hours fighting the blaze, which destroyed the home. Although it is not confirmed, a spokesperson for the fire department said it is believed that the fire may have started in the kitchen area of the home. At one point an electrical line to the residence broke loose and was sparking on the ground near the burning house. An electrical crew from Alabama Power Company responded to the scene. Troubles with the Washington County E-911 Board may have come to an end, following mandatory changes that were implemented during the Monday, Aug. 11, meeting of the Washington County Commission. The Literacy Coalition of Clarke County Board of Directors and White Smith Memorial Library hosted a library countywide meeting on July 15. State representative, Marc Keahey presented a $250 check to the Literacy program currently sponsored by the White Smith Library in Jackson. Rep. Keahey is an avid supporter and member of the Literacy Coalition and Workforce Development for our area. The check was received by Terri Flowers, literacy instructor and trainer, library director, Debra Grayson, and library board member Louis Finlay. Plans are underway to offer adult literacy tutoring at all libraries and expansion plans for faith-based and enlarging community-based services. The Jackson 11-year-old Little League All-Stars finished second in the state after falling to West Side of Mobile in the championship game in Sylacauga July 25.
