John Gordy Kimbrough, MD, FACR, 79, a native of St. Stephens and resident of Montgomery, died June 16, 2008.

He received a doctorate of medicine from the Medical College of Alabama, University of Alabama, Birmingham in 1955 and practiced radiology in Montgomery for more than 20 years at the Montgomery Baptist Hospital. Founder of Montgomery Radiology Associates, his career ended suddenly in 1986 due to a serious injury.

Kimbrough interned at Tripler Army Hospital, Honolulu, Hawaii and graduated from the U.S. Army Medical Service School, Ft. Sam Houston, Texas (1956), completing residency in radiology at Walter Reed Army Hospital, Washington D.C. (1959). He was head of the radiology department with the 10th Field Army Hospital in Wurzburg, Germany. While serving in the Army he attained rank of major.

He was a Fellow of the American College of Radiology, co-founder and secretary of the Bavarian-American Radiology Society, president of the Alabama Academy of Radiology, diplomat to the American College of Radiology, a member of the Radiology Society of North America and Phi Beta Pi fraternity and a recipient of the Alabama Academy of Radiology's Silver Award for years of service to the profession.

As founder of Kimbrough Farms he was honored twice by the Alabama Cooperative Extension Service. Memberships included the Montgomery Cattlemen's Association, the Alabama Cattlemen's Association, the Kiwanis Club of Montgomery and the First Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Maudie Ouita Beech; children, Susan (William) Henry of Houston, Ouita Sally (Wesley) McAuley and John Gordy (Bea) Kimbrough Jr., both of Montgomery, Sigrid Beech (Mark) Lamé of Garrett Park, Md.; two sisters, Martha Louise Kimbrough Musgrove of Huntsville and Susie Kimbrough Kennedy of Chance; seven grandsons, Andrew Joseph Henry, Alexander Michael Henry, William Humble Kimbrough, Wyatt Avery Kimbrough, John Kimbrough McAuley, Robert Wesley McAuley and Michael Patrick Lamé.

The service was June 20 at the First Baptist Church of Montgomery with Dr. Chester H. Jernigan, Dr. Dale Huff and the Rev. Stanley Mullen officiating. Burial was in the Alabama Heritage Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Bill Kimbrough, Tom Musgrave, Scott Musgrave, Edd Kennedy, Reginold Trawick and Lloyd Woodman.

Honorary pallbearers were Billy Powell, Tom Geary, James Cameron, Ed Truitt, Jack Lee, Edward Turner, James Pearson and Ira DeMent.
