Volunteers sought to sort St. Stephens' artifacts
The St. Stephens Historical Commission, in cooperation with the University of South Alabama Center for Archaeological Studies, will host a day of sorting historical artifacts on Saturday, July 12, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at St. Stephens Historical Park in Washington County.
Working in a recently constructed, air conditioned laboratory, volunteers will separate glass, ceramics, iron, copperbrass, bone and other artifacts from materials recently excavated from the slave quarters at the rear of the Globe Hotel, circa 1815.
Items recently discovered from the material include sewing thimbles, clay pipes, door keys, horse tack, spoons, glass beads, bone utensil handles, etc.
No experience is required. Youth, under the age of 14, must be accompanied by an adult. Participants should bring a lunch and soft drinks or water.
