Technology allowed prompt coverage of JHS, LHS wins

      Congratulations are in order to the Jackson High School Aggies for winning the 4A baseball state championship- the school's first ever state baseball title and, considering an earlier tie for a state title in football, the first outright title for any sport for the school. I know players, coaches, students, teachers and fans are proud as well they should be.

State Senate fails session
      The Alabama Legislature adjourned at midnight Monday without passing a state education budget. That means they will have to go back to Montgomery for a special session sometime before Oct. 1 to pass a budget for schools. A special session will cost the state at least $400,000.

House panel won't get into tanker issue

      The House Armed Services Committee met last week to draw up the bill that sets defense spending levels for military programs for the upcoming fiscal year. Many, including me, were concerned that provisions would be added to this bill, provisions detrimental to Northrop Grumman's contract with the Air Force to build America's new refueling tanker, the KC-45.

Montgomery-Panama City toll road being promoted

      Talk has emerged in Montgomery about construction of a toll road from the Capital City to Panama City, Fla. Among those pushing the project is Birmingham lawyer Luther Strange. Strange, who was defeated by Democrat Jim Folsom Jr.

1865 arsenal explosion blows up part of Mobile
This Week In Alabama History
      May 25, 1865: During the early weeks of Federal occupation of Mobile, the city suffers one of its worst disasters as 20 tons of captured Confederate gunpowder explodes in a warehouse being used as an arsenal. Property loss was put at $5,000,000 and the number of casualties was never determined, although it has been estimated at possibly 300.
