Slayton gets nursing degree from University of Alabama
      Jenilee Slayton graduated from the University of Alabama, Dec. 15, 2007 with a bachelor's of science degree in nursing. She is the daughter of Wayne and Terri Slayton and a 2003 graduate of Jackson Academy. While at the university, she was selected to be an Alabama athletic hostess and an Alabama baseball hostess.

Home school student is second-time essay winner
      Jacob Scurlock won second place in the VFW's district essay contest this year after having won third place last year. On Jan. 17, Scurlock was awarded a certificate naming him "a spokesman for freedom" at the Jackson VFW Post by Post Commander, Billy Allday and Secretary/Treasurer Marie Sheffield.

SGA plans fund-raisers
     The Jackson Academy Student Government Association is busy making plans for the new year. The Trail Ride in February and "The Ladies Night Out" in April will be the two major fund-raisers for the year. SGA officers for this year are (seated) Logan Barnes, president, standing (L-R) Sydney Thomas, secretary, Dent Beard, vice president, Corwren Horton, representative and Hope Atchison, treasurer.

JIS to host family game night
      Jackson Intermediate School will host a Family Game Night on Jan. 24, from 6-7 p.m. The goal for this event is to provide parents and caregivers with tools that will help their children become better learners. Families are invited to experience an evening of games, food, and door prizes.

JA Spelling Bee winners
     On Jan. 10, Jackson Academy conducted a spelling bee. Winners in grades 4-8 will represent the school at the AISA District II Spelling Bee at North Mobile Christian on Jan. 29. Sawyer Donald was the school's winner and will compete in the Clarke County Spelling Bee Feb. 8. Winners (L-R) are: Bethany Todd, 6th grade; Michael Anderson, 7th grade; Sawyer Donald, 8th grade and school winner; Joshua Carpenter, 4th grade; and McKenzie Donald, 5th grade.
